Kim Jong Il's presence is felt in series of images (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? It's hard to imagine a North Korea without Kim Jong Il, who led the nation for 17 years until his death in December.

His portrait hangs in every building, his visits to factories and shops are commemorated with signs in his honor. The song book at the hotel at Mount Kumgang features a full page of tunes with his name in the title, and the airline hostesses in lacy gloves give their thanks to him as Air Koryo flights cross into North Korean airspace.

Kim's death on Dec. 17 marks the end of an era for North Korea, which has known only two leaders: Kim and his father, Kim Il Sung. Already, a new era has begun under the leadership of his young son, Kim Jong Un.

Still, Kim Jong Il's presence is felt in every frame of these images made by Associated Press photographer David Guttenfelder over the course of our visits during the last months of Kim's life.

The white gloves on a table outside the International Friendship Exhibition Hall at Mount Myohang belong to the young guide in traditional Korean dress who eased them on before opening the front door to the museum housing gifts to the late leader.

Doctors and nurses laugh as they huff and puff their way past mountains carved with Kim's sayings and signature.

Young men in bumper cars bash each other gleefully at an amusement park that Kim ordered renovated as part of a bid to "improve the people's daily lives," one of the goals he left unfinished when he died at age 69.

Brush in hand and paint can tucked between his feet, an artisan colors in the letters for a propaganda poster from his precarious perch.

The date printed across the top of the poster reads "June of the year Juche 100 of Great Leader Kim Jong Il" ? or, to the outside world, June 2011.

Clean Energy in 2012: Geothermal progression

In this series, the RGJ examines key economic indicators for the region in 2012. Find previous stories in the series at rgj.com/business.

BY JASON HIDALGO
jhidalgo@rgj.com
It was good to be green for Northern Nevada in 2011.
Despite high unemployment and challenges in the real estate market, the renewables sector posted several positive milestones in the last year.
Geothermal had an especially good showing. The University of Nevada, Reno snagged the first-ever National Geothermal Academy program in the country, bringing people from around the world to UNR this summer. In August, Reno became the site of the Geothermal Energy Association's first National Geothermal Summit, further increasing the area's profile.
As of early 2011, Nevada's 21 operating geothermal power plants comprised a total operating capacity of 441.8 megawatts. However, more than 80 potential projects in the exploratory, planned or construction phases could boost capacity as high as 3,686 megawatts in the state. This would eclipse California's more than 2,500 megawatts of installed capacity. Total U.S. geothermal capacity currently is a little over 3,000 megawatts.
Add plans by Truckee Meadows Community College to add curriculum for geothermal, solar and wind, along with the ongoing research being done in the state, and renewables are expected to continue their strong showing in 2012.
"Ten of the innovative and cutting-edge geothermal research and demonstration projects are located in Nevada," said Paul Thomsen, public policy manager for geothermal company Ormat Technologies. "These projects will create 350 high-quality drilling and research jobs once the research and demonstration projects are fully executed."
Key challenges include a more difficult funding environment due to federal budget cuts and the global financial crisis. This is especially impacting geothermal projects, which are considered more high risk than solar or wind projects. Nevertheless, the area is on the right track for renewables, said Jason Geddes, City of Reno environmental services administrator.
"The economy continues to be a challenge overall," Geddes said. "But I think we have an opportunity to attract more (renewable) companies here."

EXPERT OUTLOOK
Our area has seen significant improvement in renewables in the last few years. Reno, for example, was named one of the greenest communities along with San Francisco and Portland, largely due to our energy efficiency and use of geothermal. ? The economy continues to be a challenge overall, but I think we have an opportunity to attract more companies here, especially with geothermal, and expand that cluster. We already have 12 different geothermal companies here so that has certainly raised awareness about our area. Northern Nevada alone will have five more geothermal plants opening up in 2012 for another 200 megawatts of energy. The school district is also moving forward with an additional 1 megawatt worth of solar, and you've got wind turbine projects within the city as well. I expect more renewable development to go on in 2012.
?"? Jason Geddes, Environmental services administrator for city of Reno

2011 was a banner year for the geothermal industry in Nevada. Ormat continued to develop projects that will generate approximately 120 megawatts of clean, renewable electricity that will assist NV Energy in meeting its renewable energy portfolio requirements. I believe new geothermal power projects will continue to be placed in service, and we expect a significant number of new projects will be completed before the December 31, 2013 production tax credit deadline. ... Key challenges for the sector include long lead times for geothermal projects, which increase developer risk, increase project and consumer costs, and delay geothermal power project timelines. Streamlining the geothermal permitting process without compromising environmental integrity will enable the industry to expedite the construction of many geothermal plants, while affording an opportunity to create jobs, build partnerships and foster innovation across a number of sectors.
"? Paul Thomsen, Ormat Technologies public policy manager

This past year we saw a lot of forward movement for renewable energy companies in Nevada, from the production of energy, manufacturing and education. ? The Legislature didn't make any changes to programs and incentives that help lure developers to the state, sending a positive message that when it comes to renewable energy in Nevada, we're open for business. I think we will continue to see a lot of homes and businesses look to renewable sources for their energy needs. If we can prove to manufacturers that there is a viable market in Nevada, they will look to locate here and bring good paying jobs and research and development dollars that are key to a successful green economy. The biggest barrier to further proliferation of development is transmission. We must find ways to deliver the energy to our biggest and best customer, California.
"? Tom Clark, Holland & Hart renewable energy lobbyist

Richard's most-used Android apps of 2011

Android Central

Over the course of the last 12 months, I've lost count of the sheer amount of applications that I've downloaded, tried, deleted, and in some cases tried again. When all is said and done though, there's a select group of apps which I use a whole lot more than others to the point that they've become part of everyday life. Here's a little list of what's been getting me through the week.

Make a "Walking Taco" in a Bag of Fritos for an Easy, Portable Snack [Food Hacks]

Make a "Walking Taco" in a Bag of Fritos for an Easy, Portable SnackThis crazy, ingenious food hack turns a bag of corn chips into a filling Mexican meal or snack. Your bag of Fritos (or Tostito tortilla chips, perhaps) serves as a bowl for the mixture of taco fillings.

Just take a single-size serving bag, add your ingredients, and go.

The comments on the Craft blog where this recipe is found note that this is actually a traditional Mexican snack or street food known as "tostilocos" (which I think means crazy toast).

Obama sees approval rating rise. Is it the economy or something else? (The Christian Science Monitor)

President Obama has enjoyed a rebound in popularity, putting him in a stronger position to defend his presidency in next year's election campaign.

Of course, there's a long way to go between now and a 2012 vote that's still more than 10 months away.

But for Mr. Obama, the important thing for now is that his job approval ratings are moving generally up rather than down, despite attacks by Republican rivals and a still-weak economy.

The latest sign: Gallup polling shows the president garnering 46 percent approval from American adults, the highest level since July and a big run-up after starting the month of December at 41 percent.

RECOMMENDED: Six boosts and six liabilities for Obama's reelection bid

Various polls of Obama's job approval, averaged by the website RealClearPolitics, show the same recovery over the past month.

Why the reversal of fortunes, after a summer downdraft in public support?

One big factor is that presidential ratings can be, in part, a mirror of how people feel about the economy and their own prospects. And on that front, the consumer outlook is that the economy is weak but improving.

On Tuesday, a widely watched index of consumer confidence, released by the Conference Board in New York, rose for December to 64.5, up from 55.2 a month earlier. (A reading of 100 on the index would equal the optimism seen in 1985.)

"After two months of considerable gains, the Consumer Confidence Index is now back to levels seen last spring," said Lynn Franco, director of research at the Conference Board. "It is too soon to tell if this is a rebound from earlier declines or a sustainable shift in attitudes."

The revival of consumer confidence, in turn, has come as the job market has shown signs of progress, the stock market stabilized, and European nations have made progress toward quieting a financial crisis.

Another reason the Obama brand name has gained ground, political analysts say, is the partisan fight over renewing a payroll tax cut for US workers. Amid a partisan stand-off, the president appears to have successfully cast himself as standing for middle-class interests.

House Republicans have supported the idea of a full-year extension for the tax break, but until recently looked unwilling to strike a compromise on a plan moved by Democratic-controlled Senate.

Assuming an extension of the payroll tax cut comes through, Obama can tout a win for average Americans ? something he fought for and delivered that affects their bank accounts.

But if Obama is back in competitive territory, he remains vulnerable. As of the latest Gallup numbers (an average of its latest three days of polling), his disapproval rating is two points higher (48 percent) than his approval rating (46 percent).

Typically, sitting presidents who win reelection have had approval ratings above 50, Gallup says.

A lot will depend on where Obama's presidency heads from here, how the Republican campaign against him shapes up, and how the economy performs. For now, the race for president looks like it could be close.

A mid-December matchup by Gallup's shows voters opting for Obama over Mitt Romney as a Republican nominee by a 50-to-48 margin. The poll got the same result for another hypothetical matchup, Obama versus Newt Gingrich.

RECOMMENDED: Six boosts and six liabilities for Obama's reelection bid

Daily Desired: A Watch That Makes It Really Hard to Tell Time [Video]

I hate everything about time. Being on time, looking at time, adhering to time. EVERYTHING. My hate for time is a big reason why I never wear watches because then, I would be handcuffed by time. AND WHO WANTS THAT. I'm a free spirit! Don't change me world! Or I can just wear this Kisai On Air Watch that looks more like a faceless watch than a timecuff. More »

India Says Reports Of Patient Deaths Untrue

The head of Rajasthan's health ministry denied reports that more than 40 patients have died in recent days amid an ongoing strike by doctors at public hospitals in the Indian state."The number of deaths being reported doesn't hold true," according to Health Minister Aimaduddin Ahmad Khan, who acknowledged a shortage of doctors and efforts to hire additional physicians. The ministry is working with private hospitals so state hospital patients can be transferred to them, he said. Some 800 doctors have been hired to fill the gap, with another 1,000 being interviewed, Khan said Monday.CNN sister network CNN-IBN reported Sunday that the government had suspended 40 doctors, and 390 others have been arrested for failing to perform their duties. Some 10,000 doctors remained on strike. The doctors, who work at government-run hospitals that cater to the poor, are demanding higher salaries and better promotion opportunities that are on par with their counterparts in federal medical services. But so far, the state government has not budged on their demands.Instead, it made interim arrangements by bringing in 373 military doctors Saturday, said Dr. Lokendra Sharma of SMS Medical College in Jaipur. Another 1,000 doctors will be brought in Monday, he said. The government has also tapped doctors from railway services, brought others out of retirement and has asked some private hospitals to provide care at government rates.Army doctors have also stepped in to help out, and emergency services were restored in some hospitals, CNN-IBN reported Sunday. But the strike has brought about real consequences, some say."Patients, they are dying," said Dr. Ganpat Chandra Gupta, an anesthesiologist. He said the government needs to negotiate with the state's government doctors."They are working in poor conditions," he said. "The government is deaf and dumb and blind."Some questioned whether doctors ought to go on strike, risking the health of those who are sick. But doctors in other Indian states sent letters of support for their peers in Rajasthan condemning the "insensitive and callous attitude" of the state government."The profession of doctors is very noble but when their voice is not heard they are forced to go on the path of agitation," said a letter signed by the heads of thee medical associations in Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

Is Obama???s Increase in Poll Numbers a Christmas Bonus? (ContributorNetwork)

ANALYSIS | President Barack Obama has rebounded somewhat in the polls, with his best approval ratings in several months. Is this rebound due the good recent economic news? Or is a December boost in surveys what most presidents get?

It was not that long ago that pundits were downgrading Obama's poll numbers. In Stephanie Condon's article, "Grim economic outlook weighs down Obama approval rating," with CBS News on December 9, she writes "Less than one year out from Election Day 2012, voters remain overwhelmingly pessimistic about the economy, and their concerns are taking a toll on President Obama's re-election chances. Just 41 percent of Americans think Mr. Obama has performed his job well enough to be elected to a second term, whereas 54 percent don't think so."

Contrast those results from Julie Pace's article "Obama on political high, but momentum hard to keep" for the Associated Press (posted on Yahoo News on December 23). She writes "Obama looked like a president in command of the stage again, for now." It documents how Obama outdueled the Republicans during the payroll tax debate, compromising on some things and standing firm on others.

In fact, the president's approval ratings have rebounded. In Yahoo's The Week, the article "President Obama's rising approval rating: 4 theories" from December 21 found that Obama is now up to an approval rating of 49 percent, with higher approval than disapproval ratings for the first time in several months.

Pace, The Week, and even CBS speculated on why Obama's political fortunes have improved. They cite his battles with House Republicans, his populism, his tough stands that appeals to his base, or possibly the economic rebound (unemployment is back under nine percent and down in nearly every state).

But could there be another factor that is driving Obama's comeback? Hey, it's Christmas! Folks are generally in a happy mood, shopping, receiving gifts, attending parties, kissing under the Mistletoe, and traveling to see loved ones. Perhaps that phone call from the pollster asking about the president doesn't get the negative response one would expect any other time during the year.

To test whether presidents get a "Christmas bonus" in their approval ratings during the holidays, I examine Gallup Poll numbers for presidents from 1992 to 2003, comparing the average of all December approval ratings to the average from the entire year. For the 12 years, only seven cases had higher holiday numbers. The average for the whole year for presidents was 56.6 percent. For December, presidents averaged a 57.952 rating. A difference of means test revealed that this is not a significant gap.

So if the holidays aren't pushing up Obama's numbers, what could it be? After all, the economic numbers were improving before the CBS poll. Obama didn't win the payroll tax debate so much as he put off any tough decisions for a few months. He talked a populist game, but didn't tax millionaires. And he didn't appeal to supporters when he compromised on the Keystone XL project, which could anger environmentalists.

So why is Obama doing better? A lot of it is coming from a very unappealing set of alternatives in the form of Republican candidates for president which make Obama look pretty good. For years, Obama has had to run against himself. Now, as we get a clearer idea of the alternative, Obama is inching back up toward 50 percent, and ahead of his rivals, even in the Rasmussen Reports. And the GOP feeding frenzy is providing the real Christmas bonus for Obama, not the holidays.

U.S. weighs travel request for Yemen's president

HONOLULU (AP) ? The Obama administration is considering whether to allow Yemen's outgoing president into the United States for medical treatment.

A senior administration official says President Ali Abdullah Saleh's office requested that he be allowed to receive specialized treatment in the U.S. for injuries sustained in a June attack on his compound.

Saleh announced Saturday that he was leaving for the U.S. in order to help calm tensions in his country following a fresh wave of violence. But he said his travel was not for medical treatment.

Saleh's presence in Yemen has angered many there, who say he wants to continue to wield his influence despite agreeing to transfer power following months of protests.

The official requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Android Approved By Pentagon

Its my understanding you don't need a "special build" of Android to not get Carrier IQ. You need a "special build" to get it - like those created by/for the carriers

correct. with ios it was probably bit tricker since they baked it in by default for some versions and I suppose thats one of the reasons they removed it, so they wouldn't be excluded from certifications in future.

and well, for everyday things except combat stuff, military would trust telecoms as usual customers(meetings where they discuss stuff like if some base gets budget or not - those talks are with politicians anyhow).

and the secret, combat etc stuff goes over their own radios and coms anyhow. in most

Rays interested in Posada?

We already know Jorge Posada isn?t returning to the Yankees, but he hasn?t dismissed the possibility of continuing his career elsewhere.

With that in mind, Javier Maymi of ESPNDeportes.com hears (link in Spanish) that the division-rival Rays are interested in the 40-year-old. Maymi confirmed the information with Posada?s father, who said he has also had some discussions with the Orioles and Phillies. However, he hasn?t decided whether he will play in 2012.

The Rays are looking at Posada as a possibility for first base, designated hitter and backup catcher. Jose Lobaton or Robinson Chirinos figure to be the primary backup for the newly-signed Jose Molina, so Posada would likely only be an emergency option behind the plate.

Posada batted .235/.315/.398 with 14 home runs, 44 RBI and a .714 OPS over 387 plate appearances this past season. He did have an .814 OPS (and all of his homers) against right-handed pitching, so he could still have some value if used appropriately.

Tebow throws 2 pick-6s

QB intercepted 4 times as Denver falls into tie with Oakland top AFC West

Image: Spencer JohnsonAP

The Bills' Spencer Johnson (91) celebrates his touchdown after intercepting a pass from Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

By JOHN WAWROW

updated 6:52 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2011

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Tim Tebow picked a terrible time to run out of fourth-quarter comebacks.

Rather than inspiring the Denver Broncos to another dramatic rally, the quarterback sealed the most dreadful performance of his two-year career by throwing four interceptions - all in the second half and two returned for touchdowns 18 seconds apart - in a 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

It happened as the Broncos (8-7) had a chance to inch closer to clinching their first playoff berth in six years, and against a Bills team that was coming off seven straight losses and had little to play for.

"My confidence is just fine," Tebow said. "I have to do a better job of not giving them opportunities. I tried to make something happen, and I tried to force it."

Denver coach John Fox hasn't lost faith in Tebow.

"I just think a couple of misreads," Fox said.

Week?15 in the NFL
Top images

??Some of the best photos from this week in the NFL.

And no, he gave no thought of pulling Tebow at any point during a second half in which four of the Broncos' final six possessions ended with interceptions.

On the bright side, Denver's not done yet, despite falling into a tie with Oakland atop the AFC West. Denver closes its season by hosting the Kansas City Chiefs next week, and still holds the tiebreaker edge over the Raiders.

"Everything is still on the table," Tebow said. "We have to go and execute and play a little better. Hopefully, we can get in the tournament."

Tebow finished 13 of 30 for 185 yards with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Fells. He added 34 yards rushing, and scored on a 1-yard plunge.

That wasn't nearly good enough for a player who entered the game best known for engineering five fourth-quarter comebacks this season.

The Bills (6-9) made sure he never got in position for a sixth in coming away with a win in their home finale.

Safety Jairus Byrd and linebacker Spencer Johnson scored on interception returns 18 seconds apart midway through the fourth quarter. C.J. Spiller rushed for a career-best 111 yards and a touchdown, and Leodis McKelvin scored on an 80-yard punt return.

"It's special," Johnson said. "We had a monkey on our back for a long time."

Added safety George Wilson: "It's a great reward for the resilience, commitment and dedication."

The Bills' four interceptions were two more than they managed in their previous seven games. They have returned five interceptions for touchdowns to set a single-season franchise record.

If the game wasn't over with 8:03 left when Byrd jumped in front of Tebow's pass intended for Eric Decker up the left hash mark and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown, then it certainly was decided on the Broncos' next play from scrimmage.

Tebow was flushed from the pocket and was scrambling to his left when linebacker Chris Kelsay dived from behind and batted the ball out of the quarterback's hand. The ball flew into the air and landed in the hands of Johnson, who ran it in from 17 yards.

Kelsay, the longest-serving member of the defense, had two sacks and led the team with nine tackles.

"We've lost seven games in a row. It wears on you," Kelsay said. "We got rewarded. We came together and we executed."

After weeks of assertive defense, the Broncos gave up 40 points for a second straight game - though Tebow's giveaways certainly didn't help. And yet Denver allowed 160 yards rushing and 351 yards in all to a banged-up Bills offense that was averaging 14.2 points and 314.7 yards during its seven-game skid.

While Tebow was struggling, Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick enjoyed his most efficient game in two months by going 15 of 27 for 196 yards with no interceptions. Fitzpatrick entered the game taking plenty of heat during the seven-game skid, in which he threw eight touchdowns versus 12 interceptions.

Dave Rayner shook off two missed field-goal attempts - and a booing crowd - to hit his final four, all from within 29 yards.

"I'm glad that Coach stuck with me," Rayner said. "I'm glad that we got opportunities, because I never want to leave a game going oh-fer."

Except for scoring touchdowns on their first possession of each half, nothing went right for the Broncos.

They went nowhere in the first half after Tebow capped a 73-yard opening drive with a 1-yard run. Denver managed just 21 yards and no first downs on its final six possessions, including a kneeldown in the final seconds.

They finished converting just two of 13 third-down chances and Tebow had four of his final six drives end with interceptions.

NOTES: After McKelvin scored, Denver's Eddie Royal returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, but it was negated by a block in the back penalty against Dante Rosario. ... Broncos RB Willis McGahee had 64 yards rushing to give him 1,054 this season. He became the second NFL player to reach 1,000 yards rushing with three teams. He previously did it with Buffalo and Baltimore. Ricky Watters rushed for 1,000 yards with San Francisco, Philadelphia and Seattle. ... The Bills finished 5-3 at home (including a win over Washington at Toronto), matching their best record since going 5-3 in 2004.

California Gay Laws Are The Mexicans? Fault, Says Wingnut

Roy Edroso shortened this piece by Mark Krikorian at the National Review as, ?What good are wetbacks if we can?t use them against faggots?? Then he added, ?you think I?m kidding?!?

Sadly, Roy is not kidding, for if you click on the piece by Krikorian, you see a lot of verbose garbage that could indeed be reduced to that base, racist sentiment. Look:

While Hispanic immigrants, like black Americans, are conservative on certain social issues (though not as much as some might think), it doesn?t matter politically. As one political scientist recently put it, in reaction to a new poll:

?It?s always been said that Latinos have a conflict between their religion and their political tendencies. That they?re usually more progressive on economic policy but conservative on social issues,? said Matt Barreto, a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle and advisor to Latino Decisions.

However, Barreto said the poll reflects no such conflict: ?Religion and social and moral values are not among their priorities when they make their political and election calculations.?

That?s part of the reason why California, the state with the largest share of immigrants in its population, has ?the first state law mandating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history and social science curricula.? It?s not that immigrants demanded this nonsense; they probably don?t even like it very much. But their large-scale presence solidifies the position of the Left, making this kind of thing possible, and they aren?t turned off by it enough to rebel against it. When there?s a referendum, sure, they?ll vote against gay marriage, for instance, but that?s not the way most social policy is made. Both by importing faithful Democratic voters and through sheer numbers creating more safe leftist seats in local and state and federal legislatures, mass immigration empowers statism and cultural leftism.

It?s all a conspiracy by the ?leftists? and the ?statists? and the gays to ?import Mexicans? in order to create laws mandating that gay history be taught in California, you see. Now, what I want you to notice about this fine wingnut hackery is just how many of their ooga-boogas it involves. You?ve got big gub?mint, you got lib?ruls, you got gays and you?ve got ?illegally imported? Mexicans! This works on their readers because wingnuts don?t have to explain anything. They just have to invoke the specter of things their readers are afraid of and it?s considered a Q.E.D. situation.

It?s not that Democrats are necessarily bad (well, the slaveholder part was bad, but we finally beat that out of them),

By turning them into Republicans?

But it does mean that any successful GOP effort to woo immigrants and their children will take generations ? and if small-government, morally traditionalist, pro-sovereignty conservatism is to have any chance of lasting political success during our lifetimes, future immigration must be curbed.

In order to keep ?Murka pearly white, Christian and heterosexual, we have to keep dark-skinned people out. Gotcha.

How exactly has conservative rhetoric changed in the past forty years?

Smallest-ever exoplanets found, one step closer to Earth-twin

These planets, while roughly the size of our planet Earth, are circling very close to their star, giving them fiery temperatures that are most likely too hot to support life, researchers said.

This story was updated at 1:54 p.m. ET.

Two planets orbiting a star 950 light-years from Earth are the smallest, most Earth-size alien worlds known, astronomers announced today (Dec. 20). One of the planets is actually smaller than Earth, scientists say.

These planets, while roughly the size of our planet Earth, are circling very close to their star, giving them fiery temperatures that are most likely too hot to support life, researchers said. The discovery, however, brings scientists one step closer to finding a?true twin of Earth?that may be habitable.

"We've crossed a threshold: For the first time, we've been able to detect planets smaller than the Earth around another star," lead researcher Fran?ois Fressin of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., told SPACE.com. "We proved that Earth-size planets exist around other stars like the sun, and most importantly, we proved that humanity is able to detect them. It's the beginning of an era."

To discover the new planets, Fressin and his colleagues used?NASA's Kepler space telescope, which noticed the tiny dips in the parent star's brightness when the planets passed in front of it, blocking some of its light (this is called the transit method). The researchers then used ground-based observatories to confirm that the planets actually exist by measuring minute wobbles in the star's position caused by gravitational tugs from its planets.

"These two new planets are the first genuinely?Earth-sized?worlds that have been found orbiting a sunlike star," University of California, Santa Cruz astronomer Greg Laughlin, who was not involved in the new study, said in an email to SPACE.com. "For the past two decades, it has been clear that astronomers would eventually reach this goal, and so it's fantastic to learn that the detection has now been achieved." [Gallery: Smallest Alien Planets Ever Seen]

Chances for life

The two Earth-size planets are among five alien worlds orbiting a star called Kepler-20 that is of the same class (G-type) as our sun, and is slightly cooler.

Two of the star system's planets, Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f, are 0.87 times and 1.03 times the width of Earth, respectively, making them the smallest exoplanets yet known. They also appear to be rocky, and have masses less than 1.7 and 3 times Earth's mass, respectively. Scientists think that they are composed mainly of silicates and iron, much like the Earth, though they lack our planet's atmsophere.

Kepler-20e makes a circle around its star once every 6.1 days at a distance of 4.7 million miles (7.6 million kilometers) ? almost 20 times closer than Earth, which orbits the sun at around 93 million miles (150 million km).

The planet's sibling, Kepler-20f, makes a full orbit every 19.6 days, at a distance of 10.3 million miles (16.6 million km). Both planets circle closer to their star than Mercury does to the sun. [Infographic: Earth-Size Alien Planets Explained]

These snuggly orbits around their star give the newfound planets steamy temperatures of about 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit (760 degrees Celsius) and 800 degrees Fahrenheit (430 degrees Celsius) ? way too warm to support liquid water, and probably life, researchers said.

Fressin said the chance of life on either of these planets is "negligible," though the researchers can't exclude the possibility that they used to be habitable in the past, when they might have been farther from their star. There is also a slim chance that there are habitable regions on the planets in spots between their day and night sides (the planets orbit with one half constantly facing their star and the other half always in dark). But astronomers aren't holding out hope.

"The chances of liquid water and life as we know it on Kepler-20e and f are zero," Laughlin said.

Flip-flopped planets

The planetary system around Kepler-20 is an unusual one.

For one thing, scientists say the rocky planets can't have formed in their current locations.

"There's not enough rocky material that close to the host star to form five planets," Fressin said. "They didn't form here; they probably formed farther from their star and migrated in."

Furthermore, the five planets are in an odd order, with the rocky worlds alternating with their gaseous, Neptune-size siblings. That's quite different from most solar systems, including our own, which keeps the rocky terrestrial worlds in close to the sun, with the gas giants farther out.

"The architecture of that solar system is crazy," science team member David Charbonneau of Harvard University said during a Tuesday telecon announcing the finding. "This is the first time that we've seen anything like this."

Scientists will likely have to revise their theories of how planets form to fully understand the Kepler-20 system.

"How did that form?" Fressin said. "I think it's a puzzle the theorists will have to try to explain."

The star's other planets are called Kepler-20b, 20c, and 20d. Their diameters are 15,000 miles (24,000 km), 24,600 miles (40,000 km), and 22,000 miles (35,000 km), respectively, and they orbit Kepler-20 once every 3.7, 10.9, and 77.6 days.

The largest of these, Kepler-20d, weighs a little under 20 times Earth's mass, while Kepler-20c is 16.1 times as heavy as Earth, and Kepler-20b is 8.7 times our planet's mass.

Evolving effort

Scientists say finding the smallest exoplanets yet represents a significant milestone in the fast-evolving effort to learn about planets beyond the solar system.

The first alien planet was discovered in 1996, and the first planet found through the transit method came just 11 years ago. Both of those planets were roughly the size of Jupiter.

"I think we're living in special times," Fressin said. "This was unfeasible 10 years ago, and just with the quality of detectors and the quality of the treatment is it possible now."

The total tally of?known alien planets is above 700. Kepler alone has discovered 28 definite alien planets, and 2,326 planet candidates, since its launch in March 2009.

Earlier this month, the Kepler team announced another landmark find, the?first planet known to occupy the habitable zone?around its star where liquid water, and perhaps life, could exist.

That planet, called Kepler-22b, is about 2.4 times as wide as Earth.

The dream now is for astronomers to combine the two discoveries and find an Earth-size planet that's also orbiting its star in an Earth-like orbit that puts it in the habitable zone.

"The holy grail of the search for other worlds is to find an Earth analogue, a true Earth twin," Fressin said. "We just need to have these two pieces of the puzzle together."

While the newfound planets orbit with periods of 6.1 and 19.6 days, Fressin estimated the habitable zone around Kepler-20 begins at orbits that take roughly 100 days to make a circuit.

Astronomers think it's only a?matter of time before they finally find one?that's just right.

"These discoveries are a great technological step forward ? to detect small planets, in size like Earth ? but these planets are very hot and not in the habitable zone around their star," astronomer Lisa Kaltenegger of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics wrote in an email. Kaltenegger, who studies the habitability of exoplanets, was not involved in the new study. "If we can already find these small planets with radii around Earth's now, some future ones could be in the habitable zone of their stars and THOSE future ones would be great targets to look for liquid water and signatures for life."

A paper detailing the discovery was published online in the journal Nature Dec. 20.

Does This Animal Live Unusually Long? [Slide Show]

Web Exclusives | Evolution

An index called the longevity quotient indicates whether a species has an average life span or is unusually long-lived or short-lived for an animal of its size. A score of 1 is average; higher numbers reflect unusual longevity.

Steven Austad, of the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, has applied the longevity quotient?which he developed?to many species, including those depicted here. The quotient is determined by dividing the greatest recorded longevity for a species by the life span that would be expected based on the species's average weight. Except for humans and Brandt's bat, the scores refer to animals in captivity.

Romo sparks Cowboys to big win over Buccaneers (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Tony Romo passed for three touchdowns and scored another as the Dallas Cowboys kept their NFC East title hopes on track with a 31-15 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday.

Quarterback Romo stoked the Cowboys (8-6) to a 28-0 halftime lead as they moved a half-game ahead of the New York Giants in the NFC East.

New York (7-6) can regain a share of the lead with a win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

"It was nice to go out there and play the way we did," Romo told reporters. "Offensively we did a really good job but boy our defense played outstanding ball."

Dallas can claim the NFC East title with wins over Philadelphia and the Giants in the next two weeks.

"It is going to be a good tough battle," Romo said of the January 1 return meeting with the Giants, who edged the Cowboys 37-34 last week. "But we are going to be ready for it."

Two consecutive defeats in which they blew fourth-quarter leads had dropped the Cowboys into a tie with the Giants, but they roared back behind their captain.

Romo hit Miles Austin and Dez Bryant with eight-yard scoring strikes in the first quarter and threw a nine-yard pass to Laurent Robinson for another score in the second.

He helped push the score to 28-0 with a one-yard sneak seconds before halftime.

"I was just throwing the ball, finding the guys open and the guys did the rest," Romo, who finished the game with 23 completions for 249 yards, said of the big first half.

Tampa Bay (4-10), who lost for the eighth consecutive time, finally got on the board after a Romo fumble in the third quarter.

Defensive end Adrian Clayborn sacked Romo, forcing the fumble which linebacker Dekoda Watson scooped up and ran seven yards for a touchdown.

Dallas added a field goal before Josh Freeman led Tampa Bay on a 75-yard drive climaxed by his 13-yard pass to Dezmon Briscoe. Freeman's throw for the two-point conversion made it 31-15 to end the scoring.

The Buccanners' quarterback finished with 17 of 27 passes for 148 yards.

Dallas were playing without top running back DeMarco Murray, who is out for the year with broken ankle, but Felix Jones again filled the void, rushing for 108 yards on 22 carries after gaining 106 yards in the loss to New York.

"He did a great job," Romo said. "We are lucky to have some depth at the tailback position."

Killing of bin Laden voted top news story of 2011 (AP)

NEW YORK ? The killing of Osama bin Laden during a raid by Navy SEALs on his hideout in Pakistan was the top news story of 2011, followed by Japan's earthquake/tsunami/meltdown disaster, according to The Associated Press' annual poll of U.S. editors and news directors.

The death of bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader who masterminded the Sept. 11 terror attacks, received 128 first-place votes out of 247 ballots cast for the top 10 stories. The Japan disaster was next, with 60 first-place votes. Placing third were the Arab Spring uprisings that rocked North Africa and the Middle East, while the European Union's financial turmoil was No. 4.

The international flavor of these top stories contrasted with last year's voting ? when the Gulf of Mexico oil spill was the top story, President Barack Obama's health care overhaul was No. 2, and the U.S. midterm elections were No. 3.

Here are 2011's top 10 stories, in order:

_OSAMA BIN LADEN'S DEATH: He'd been the world's most-wanted terrorist for nearly a decade, ever since a team of his al-Qaida followers carried out the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. In May, the long and often-frustrating manhunt ended with a nighttime assault by a helicopter-borne special operations squad on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Bin Laden was shot dead by one of the raiders, and within hours his body was buried at sea.

_JAPAN'S TRIPLE DISASTER: A 9.0-magnitude earthquake off Japan's northeast coast in March unleashed a tsunami that devastated scores of communities, leaving nearly 20,000 people dead or missing and wreaking an estimated $218 billion in damage. The tsunami triggered the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl after waves knocked out the cooling system at a nuclear power plant, causing it to spew radiation that turned up in local produce. About 100,000 people evacuated from the area have not returned to their homes.

_ARAB SPRING: It began with demonstrations in Tunisia that rapidly toppled the longtime strongman. Spreading like a wildfire, the Arab Spring protests sparked a revolution in Egypt that ousted Hosni Mubarak, fueled a civil war in Libya that climaxed with Moammar Gadhafi's death, and fomented a bloody uprising in Syria against the Assad regime. Bahrain and Yemen also experienced major protests and unrest.

_EU FISCAL CRISIS: The European Union was wracked by relentless fiscal turmoil. In Greece, austerity measures triggered strikes, protests and riots, while Italy's economic woes toppled Premier Silvio Berlusconi. France and Germany led urgent efforts to ease the debt crisis; Britain balked at proposed changes.

_US ECONOMY: By some measures, the U.S. economy gained strength as the year progressed. Hiring picked up a bit, consumers were spending more, and the unemployment rate finally dipped below 9 percent. But millions of Americans remained buffeted by foreclosures, joblessness and benefit cutbacks, and investors were on edge monitoring the chain of fiscal crises in Europe.

_PENN STATE SEX ABUSE SCANDAL: One of America's most storied college football programs was tarnished in a scandal that prompted the firing of Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno. One of his former assistants, Jerry Sandusky, was accused of sexually molesting 10 boys; two senior Penn State officials were charged with perjury; and the longtime president was ousted. Paterno wasn't charged, but expressed regret he didn't do more after being told there was a problem.

_GADHAFI TOPPLED IN LIBYA: After nearly 42 years of mercurial and often brutal rule, Moammar Gadhafi was toppled by his own people. Anti-government protests escalated into an eight-month rebellion, backed by NATO bombing, that shattered his regime, and Gadhafi finally was tracked down and killed in the fishing village where he was born.

_FISCAL SHOWDOWNS IN CONGRESS: Partisan divisions in Congress led to several showdowns on fiscal issues. A fight over the debt ceiling prompted Standard & Poor's to strip the U.S. of its AAA credit rating. Later, the so-called "supercommittee" failed to agree on a deficit-reduction package of at least $1.2 trillion ? potentially triggering automatic spending cuts of that amount starting in 2013.

_OCCUPY WALL STREET PROTESTS: It began Sept. 17 with a protest at a New York City park near Wall Street, and within weeks spread to scores of communities across the U.S. and abroad. The movement depicted itself as leaderless and shied away from specific demands, but succeeded in airing its complaint that the richest 1 percent of Americans benefit at the expense of the rest. As winter approached, local police dismantled several of the protest encampments.

_GABRIELLE GIFFORDS SHOT: The popular third-term congresswoman from Arizona suffered a severe brain injury when she and 18 other people were shot by a gunman as she met with constituents outside a Tucson supermarket in January. Six people died, and Giffords' painstaking recovery is still in progress.

Among the news events falling just short of the Top 10 were the death of Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs, Hurricane Irene, the devastating series of tornados across Midwest and Southeastern U.S., and the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that barred gays from serving openly in U.S. military.

Russia scrambles to save some 100 trapped whales (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russian agencies are scrambling to some 100 beluga whales ? an endangered species ? that are trapped among large chunks of polar ice floating in the frigid Bering Sea.

Russia's nature protection watchdog says there is a chance that the whales might perish. Authorities say the ice is 10-15 centimeters (4-6 inches) thick and is preventing the whales from reaching the open sea where they can swim freely.

Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology said Thursday that it has asked the Transportation Ministry for help and that an inter-departmental group is working on how to save the whales.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature listed the beluga whale as an endangered species in 2008.

Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga Top Google Zeitgeist Year-End Lists

Bieber named Google's Most Popular Person of 2011, while 'Born This Way' tops Fastest Rising Songs chart.
By James Montgomery

Let this serve as undeniable proof that, regardless of search engine, Justin Bieber truly dominates the Interwebs.

Having already been named Bing's most-searched person of 2011, on Thursday (December 15) Bieber picked up another e-honor, as Google unveiled its annual Zeitgeist site and, in the process, declared him its Most Popular Person of the year, besting Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga to take home the title. Nicki Minaj and, uh, Casey Anthony rounded out the top 5.

It's a fitting way to cap off a year that saw Bieber beat Gaga in the race to 2 billion YouTube views, though perhaps the Mother Monster can take solace in the fact that "Born This Way" topped Google's Fastest-Rising Song search list, ahead of "Watch the Throne" (which, you know, isn't actually a song) and Blake Shelton's "Honey Bee."

Of course, not even Bieber could best Rebecca Black on Google's Fastest Rising Searches, as the "Friday" sensation topped the list — which tallied worldwide searches — ahead of Google Plus, Ryan Dunn, Casey Anthony and "Battlefield 3." Breakout star Adele also made huge headways this year, landing at #7 on the list and beating out Steve Jobs and the iPad 2.

Not surprisingly, Black also came in atop the Fastest-Rising People list, besting "American Idol" champ Scotty McCreery and teenage bride/ pumpkin-patch enthusiast Courtney Stodden.

But when it came to the year's most-searched images, well, neither Bieber nor Black made the cut. Instead, folks were seeking pics of Charlie Sheen above all else, followed by "Planking," "Kim Kardashian wedding" and a trio of hair-raising (or perhaps razing) queries: "Tom Brady Haircut," "Selena Gomez Haircut" and "Emma Watson Haircut."

Headaches May Plague Many With HIV/AIDS (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 14 (HealthDay News) -- Headache affects 50 percent of HIV/AIDS patients in the United States, and many of those headaches are severe, a new study says.

About 27.5 percent of the 200 HIV/AIDS patients in the study suffered "chronic migraine," a rare condition in which a person has migraine symptoms (with or without other headaches) for 15 or more days a month. This condition occurs in only 2 percent of the general population.

"This translates into a 13-fold increased risk of chronic migraine among patients with HIV disease," study author Todd Smitherman, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Mississippi, said in a university news release.

"The strongest predictor of headache was the severity of HIV disease, such that patients with more advanced disease had more frequent, more severe and more disabling migraines," he added.

For the study, the researchers interviewed Montgomery, Ala., clinic patients who have HIV or AIDs and reviewed their medical records to look for any other cause of headache.

The findings, recently published online in the journal Headache, could help lead to improved treatment and reduced medical costs for HIV patients who suffer headaches, the researchers said.

"This research is of interest to clinicians and physicians for several reasons," Smitherman said. "Recent research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that, despite the availability of medications that effectively slow disease progression, most Americans with HIV do not have the disease under control. Our study shows that patients with poorly controlled HIV/AIDS are most prone to suffer also from frequent, severe migraines at rates that far exceed those of the general population."

The authors said theirs is the first study since highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) became widely available to find that having HIV/AIDS is associated with a very high risk of headache, particularly migraines.

Doctors need to regularly monitor immune system functioning in HIV/AIDS patients and pay close attention to headache symptoms in those with more advanced disease, the researchers said.
