Asia stocks muted as US earnings underwhelm

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets stalled Tuesday following the release of disappointing U.S. corporate earnings, but a weakening yen helped support Japanese shares.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.1 percent to 9,017.83, a day after the country's currency fell to a three-month low against the dollar. A weak yen helps the country's mammoth export sector by raising the value of company profits repatriated from abroad.

South Korea's Kospi shed 0.3 percent to 1,934.59. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.2 percent to 4,550.40. Benchmarks in Singapore and Indonesia rose while Taiwan's fell. Mainland Chinese shares were mixed and Hong Kong markets were closed for a public holiday.

U.S. stock markets were nearly flat Monday after investors were hit with more underwhelming third-quarter earnings reports. Investors were disappointed by earnings reports from toy maker Hasbro, clothing maker VF Corp., regional bank SunTrust and other companies.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose marginally to 13,345.89. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose less than 0.1 percent to 1,433.81. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.4 percent to 3,016.96.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3053 from $1.3045 late Monday in New York. The dollar slipped slightly to 79.84 yen from 79.89 yen.

The Japanese currency fell to its lowest level against the dollar in over three months Monday after Japan said that its exports fell 10.3 percent in September from a year earlier.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 41 cents to $89.06 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.32 to finish at $88.73 in New York.

TV, devices in kids' bedrooms linked to poor sleep, obesity

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Children who bask in the nighttime glow of a TV or computer don't get enough rest and suffer from poor lifestyle habits, new research from the University of Alberta has shown.

A province-wide survey of Grade 5 students in Alberta showed that as little as one hour of additional sleep decreased the odds of being overweight or obese by 28 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively. Children with one or more electronic devices in the bedroom -- TVs, computers, video games and cellphones -- were also far more likely to be overweight or obese.

"If you want your kids to sleep better and live a healthier lifestyle, get the technology out of the bedroom," said co-author Paul Veugelers, a professor in the School of Public Health, Canada Research Chair in Population Health and Alberta Innovates -- Health Solutions Health Scholar.

Veugelers, director of the Population Health Intervention Research Unit that works with the Alberta Project Promoting active Living and healthy Eating (APPLE Schools), said the research is the first to connect the dots on the relationship between sleep, diet and physical activity among kids.

Nearly 3,400 Grade 5 students were asked about their nighttime sleep habits and access to electronics through the REAL Kids Alberta survey. Half of the students had a TV, DVD player or video game console in their bedroom, 21 per cent had a computer and 17 per cent had a cellphone. Five per cent of students had all three types of devices.

Some 57 per cent of students reported using electronics after they were supposed to be asleep, with watching TV and movies being the most popular activity. Twenty-seven per cent of students engaged in three or more activities after bedtime.

Researchers found that students with access to one electronic device were 1.47 times as likely to be overweight as kids with no devices in the bedroom. That increased to 2.57 times for kids with three devices, with similar results reported among obese children.

More sleep also led to significantly more physical activity and better diet choices, researchers found.

Co-author Christina Fung noted that children today are not sleeping as much as previous generations, with two-thirds not getting the recommended hours of sleep per night. In addition to healthy lifestyle habits, a good night's sleep has been linked to better academic outcomes, fewer mood disorders and other positive health outcomes, she said.

"It's important to teach these children at an earlier age and teach them healthy habits when they are younger."

The research was published in September by the journal Pediatric Obesity, in an early online release. The REAL Kids Alberta evaluation was funded through a contract with Alberta Health.

Pesticides put bumblebee colonies at risk of failure

OSLO | Sun Oct 21, 2012 1:41pm EDT

OSLO (Reuters) - Pesticides used in farming are also killing worker bumblebees and damaging their ability to gather food, meaning colonies that are vital for plant pollination are more likely to fail when they are used, a study showed on Sunday.

The United Nations has estimated that a third of all plant-based foods eaten by people depend on bee pollination and scientists have been baffled by plummeting numbers of bees, mainly in North America and Europe, in recent years.

British scientists said they exposed colonies of 40 bumblebees, which are bigger than the more common honeybee, to the pesticides neonicotinoid and pyrethroid over four weeks at levels similar to those in fields.

Neonicotinoids are nicotine-like chemicals used to protect various crops from locusts, aphids and other pests.

"Chronic exposure ... impairs natural foraging behavior and increases worker mortality, leading to significant reductions in brood development and colony success," the scientists wrote in the report in the journal Nature on Sunday.

Exposure to a combination of the two pesticides "increases the propensity of colonies to fail", according to the researchers at Royal Holloway, University of London.

A 2011 U.N. report estimated that bees and other pollinators such as butterflies, beetles or birds do work worth 153 billion euros ($200 billion) a year to the human economy and are in decline in many nations.

The findings underscored the importance of wider testing of pesticides to ensure they do not also target bees, it said.

France banned a neonicotinoid pesticide made by Swiss agrochemicals group Syngenta in June, citing evidence of a threat to the country's bees. A report last month, however, said that the original research was flawed.

"My guess is that the decline of bees is like a jigsaw -there are probably a lot of pieces to put into place. This is probably a very important piece of that jigsaw," lead author Richard Gill told Reuters of the findings about pesticides.

PARASITES

In a separate commentary in Nature, Juliet Osborne of the University of Exeter in England said the study underscored the need to understand all factors that may contribute to harm bees and to "Colony Collapse Disorder".

"For example, we have as yet no convincing demonstration of the relative effects of pesticides on bee colonies compared to the effects of parasites, pathogens and foraging resources," she wrote.

Gill endorsed recommendations by the European Food Safety Authority for longer testing on adult bees and larvae, new ways of assessing cumulative exposure to toxins and separate assessments for different bee species.

He said previous studies had mostly examined the impact of pesticides on individual bees, rather than colonies. Bumblebees form colonies of a few dozen bees, while honeybees can number up to tens of thousands.

"Effects at the individual level can have a major knock-on effect at the colony level. That's the novelty of the study," he said.

The average number of bees lost in the experiment - both dead in the nesting box and failing to return - was about two-thirds of the total for bees exposed to a combination of the two pesticides against a third for a control, exposed to neither.

Bumblebees exposed to a combination of pesticides were about half as successful at gathering pollen, used as food, compared to a control. They also devoted more workers to collecting food, meaning fewer were raising larvae.

Other experts said more research was needed. "It certainly wouldn't be fair to say that this research spells doom for wild bees," said James Cresswell of the University of Exeter.

2am Dessert Bar ? Contemporary Desserts with Wine Pairings ...

It?s no secret Singapore lacks a wine culture. For most, the urge to splurge on a bottle of wine costing as much as the meal itself just doesn?t seem all that appealing. It doesn?t help that when a wine menu arrives, one meets lines and lines of words that seem all too foreign. Not wanting to buy something that we might not enjoy, we typically settle for a lesser soft drink or a more approachable beer.

Harbouring such feelings for the longest time, I decided to take a little more initiative over the past 2 months by attending wine tastings. Rather than just buying bottles off the rack, I think wine tastings are the best way to get a crash course on wine appreciation. That?s because by trying different wines one after another, you will be better able to appreciate the subtle and not so subtle differences between different labels.

The latest wine tasting I attended was at 2am Dessert Bar, an event organized by the SMU Wine Appreciation Club. I paid a nominal fee of $30 for 3 desserts with wine pairings and if you are vaguely aware of 2am?s price catalogue, you would have realized that I probably saved about $90, much thanks to SMU subsidizing my meals! Now you now why SMU charges school fees that are 20% higher than NUS?s and NTU?s?

While there?s classical fare like Tiramisu, Cheesecake and Chocolate Cake available, I?d imagine that 2am prides itself more on creating contemporary desserts that play on all your senses. To enhance the whole dessert experience, every dessert on the menu also comes with a recommended wine pairing. Friend R tried their degustation menu a while back and told me for one of the courses, she was given a test tube smelling of Popcorn to whiff at while having her Popcorn dessert. Interesting much?

The first dessert I had was the Popcorn ($17++) but it wasn?t the same one as what R got previously if that?s why you are wondering. It?s a creative concept, where 2 different types of popcorn mousses (sweet and salty) sprinkled with dehydrated popcorn are at the opposite ends of the dish, with Passionfruit sorbet in the centre. The silky popcorn mousses totally worked for me, with both varieties tasting exactly how actual popcorn tastes like. Despite being polar opposites, I still found trouble deciding on my favorite. My only gripe was that the sorbet was extremely sour, much too sharp for the delicate tasting popcorn mousse in my humble opinion.

Pairing this dessert was Prophet?s Rock Pinot Gris Central Otago 2oo8 ($18++), a white wine from New Zealand. Despite taking down tasting notes, I shan?t go into describing the wines because I believe the articulation of wine flavours varies quite greatly from person to person and I?d hate to sound like a pretentious snob saying the wine tastes of vanilla, pine nuts and lychee.

For the 2nd dessert, I had the Kayambe H2O ($18++), which is essentially Chocolate Rocks with Caramel, a Burnt Caramel ball, Chocolate Soil and Yuzu Sorbet, made using 72% Michel Cluizel Chocolate (a French chocolate with 72% cocoa content), and Evian water. This dessert didn?t quite agree with me as the chocolate comes across as a little too heavy. The best thing in this dish was probably the yuzu sorbet.

This dessert was paired with Finca Constancia Petit Verdot & Syrah 2010 ($21++), a red wine from Spain that smells of matured fruit (imagine stewed fruit) rather than fresh ones. Anyway a random wine tip I learnt at this juncture was that as red wines get older, it gets a lighter shade. When white wines get lighter, it gets a darker shade.

Lastly, I had the Cheese Avalanche ($18++), a deconstructed Cheesecake with Biscotti, Candied Figs, Spanish Corn and sous vide Cantaloupe (a classy synonym for Rock Melon). My favourite of the 3 desserts, I was amazed at how balanced this dish was in flavour. The cheesecake was smooth but by itself, it would have been merely pleasant and uninteresting. I liked how the rock melon cubes added the extra sweetness while the spanish corn (tastes like those corn snacks you get from Philippines) added a savoury tone and distinct crunch.

This dessert was paired with Pauleczki Tokaji 3 Hungary 2000 ($16++), a sweet dessert wine that goes down pretty smoothly, downplaying the actual alcohol content.

Desserts take centre stage at 2am Dessert Bar so apart from the few snacks like Fries and Drumlets, there isn?t much ?proper food? here. Then again, you might be surprised at how 3 desserts can fill you up quite nicely for dinner.

Lebanese on edge after car bomb linked to Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanese protesters erected flaming roadblocks and gunmen roamed the streets on Saturday in a city on edge after the assassination of a top security official in a powerful car bomb the prime minister linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria.

The crisis raised a terrifying specter for Lebanese who fear their country could easily plunge back into cycles of violence and reprisal that have haunted it for decades.

Friday's blast in the heart of Beirut's Christian area killed eight people, including the country's intelligence chief, Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan. It was the deadliest bombing in Beirut in four years, shattering the country's uneasy calm.

The government declared a national day of mourning for the victims Saturday, but protesters burned tires and set up roadblocks in anger.

Sharbal Abdo, who lives in the neighborhood where the bomb went off, brought his 6-year-old son, Chris, and 12-year-old daughter, Jane, to see the destruction Saturday.

"They were very afraid yesterday," he said. "They need to face this situation. It may be their future."

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Saturday linked the bombing to al-Hassan's high-profile investigation this summer that uncovered what authorities called a plot by Syria to provoke chaos in Lebanon with bombings and assassinations.

"I don't want to prejudge the investigation, but in fact we cannot separate yesterday's crime from the revelation of the explosions that could have happened," Mikati said at a news conference following an emergency Cabinet meeting.

Mikati, who opponents believe is too close to Syria and the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, offered to resign after the bombing, but was asked by President Michel Suleiman to stay.

Al-Hassan's probe led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Assad's most loyal allies in Lebanon. Samaha, who is in custody, is accused of plotting a wave of attacks in Lebanon at Syria's behest. Indicted in absentia in the August sweep was Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's highest aides.

Samaha's arrest was an embarrassing blow to Syria, which has long acted with impunity in Lebanon. Syria has powerful allies here, including the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which now dominates the government.

For much of the past 30 years, Lebanese have lived under Syrian military and political domination.

Damascus' hold on Lebanon began to slip in 2005, when former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated in truck bomb along Beirut's Mediterranean waterfront. Syria denied having any role. But broad public outrage in Lebanon forced Syria to withdraw its troops from the country.

The killings of anti-Syrian figures continued for years, however, and Assad has managed to maintain his influence in Lebanon through Hezbollah and other allies.

Now, as the Syrian civil war rages just across the border, Lebanon increasingly is getting sucked in.

Mikati said Saturday he had offered to resign after Friday's car bomb, but said Suleiman asked him not to plunge the country into more uncertainty.

The bombing raised fears that the crisis could unleash Lebanon's sectarian tensions, a dire scenario for a country that endured a devastating civil war of its own from 1975-1990.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon spoke Saturday with Suleiman and stressed the importance of "dissociating the country from regional events" and in Lebanon's sovereignty, a U.N. spokesman said.

The Syrian unrest has already enflamed tensions here. Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims have tended to back Assad. Al-Hassan was a Sunni whose stances were widely seen to oppose Syria and Hezbollah.

Hundreds of Sunni protesters marched in force through downtown Beirut Saturday, placing the blame squarely on Syria and Hezbollah for al-Hassan's killing.

"Hezbollah is a terrorist group!" they shouted.

Police were trying to identify the bombers and find out how they managed to target al-Hassan, an important security figure who traveled under great protection and who likely took more precautions following Samaha's arrest.

"We don't expect to reveal the crime within few hours," police commander Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi told Future TV. "The investigation is like a puzzle. You collect the pieces and put them together in a logical way."

Al-Hassan had many potential enemies.

Besides his investigation of Samaha, al-Hassan helped investigate the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a powerful Sunni figure. An international tribunal indicted four members of Hezbollah for Hariri's killing, although the group denies involvement.

His department also had a role in breaking up several Israeli spy rings inside Lebanon in recent years, Lebanese officials said.

Al-Hassan, 47, who was married with two children, is expected to be buried Sunday next to Hariri's tomb in downtown Beirut. His family arrived in Lebanon on Saturday on a private plane from Paris, where they live.

Lebanon's top Sunni cleric, Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Kabbani, condemned the assassination, calling it a "criminal explosion that targets Lebanon and its people." He also called for self-restraint, saying "the criminal will get his punishment sooner or later."

But many Lebanese were seething with anger.

In the eastern town of Marj, protesters tried to storm an office of the pro-Syrian Itihad group. Lebanese soldiers pushed them away, wounding five protesters, security officials said. Dozens of people who marched in protest in the border town of Moqueibleh came under fire from the Syrian side of the border, forcing them to disperse, the officials said.

The highway linking central Beirut with the city's international airport was closed, as well as the highway that links the capital with Syria, the officials said.

In the predominantly Sunni northern city of Tripoli, gunmen were roaming the streets on motorcycles and opening fire in the air.

The army issued a statement urging Lebanese to overcome the crisis and coordinate among themselves in order to give a chance to the "the criminal killers who tried through the crime to incite strife and split the country."

Taylor Swift Loves To Kiki With Fans About Relationship Issues ...

Taylor Swift loves to sing about all of her boyfriend issues, so it makes total sense that she loves to talk about them too.

The country cutie ? whose hits include songs like We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, You Belong With Me and Love Story ? revealed in a recent interview that she talks to fan about relationship issues all the time.

In fact, it's her absolute FAVORITE thing to discuss with them and explained:

?I end up in conversations about relationships no matter what. When I talk to fans and I see them in public or I run into them at Starbucks or at the airport or something, they always ask me about their boyfriend issues, and I love it! It?s my favorite thing to talk about.?

When Connor Kennedy's 22-year-old girlfriend offered the reason behind her passion for love, she continued:

?I just love talking about love. I love writing about love. I love thinking about love because it?s so unpredictable.?

It is unpredictable, but totally sucks when you lose it, which seems to be the driving emotion for a lot of her songs.

That's probably because her biggest fear is "losing someone I love", so when it happens, you better believe they are making it into her music.

Don't break her heart, Connor!

IndyCar founder Tony George resigns from board

IndyCar founder Tony George resigned Friday from the Hulman & Co. board of directors, citing a conflict of interest in his recent attempt to reacquire the series.

"I realize that my recent efforts to explore the possibility of acquiring IndyCar represent the appearance of a conflict, and it is in everyone's best interest that I resign," George said in a statement. "It goes without saying that I want to do what is best for this organization."

IndyCar is owned by the Hulman-George family, which has owned Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1945. The series is governed by the Hulman & Co. board of directors, which is at 10 members after George's resignation.

Among those still on the board are his mother, Mari Hulman George, and his sisters, Nancy L. George, M. Josephine George and Katherine M. George-Conforti. Hulman & Co., through president and CEO Jeff Belskus, reiterated Friday that IndyCar is not for sale.

George had been rumored for months to be trying to take back control of the series he founded in 1996 and oust current CEO Randy Bernard, and he reportedly submitted a purchase proposal last week.

"Tony George has made the difficult decision to resign from the board because of his involvement with a group that has recently expressed an interest in purchasing the Hulman & Co.-owned IndyCar organization," Belskus said. "While the business is not for sale and no offers to sell it have been considered or are being considered, we applaud Tony's efforts to resolve the appearance of a conflict and appreciate the gravity of this decision."

George was ousted as CEO of IndyCar by his mother and sisters in 2009. He also resigned his spot on the board of directors, but rejoined in 2011. He was president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 1990-2004, and was CEO of IMS from 1990-2009.

Belskus said there is no immediate plan to fill George's vacancy on the board. George is a co-owner with his stepson, driver Ed Carpenter, of IndyCar team Ed Carpenter Racing.

"Tony has been involved with our businesses for many years and has contributed significantly through his leadership role with IMS and IndyCar and as a member of this board," Belskus said. "We wish Tony much success in the future."

Paving Contractors And What They Can Do For You | Home ...

Typically known as imprinted or patterned concrete, stamped concrete is a concrete that is made to look like slate, stone, wood, brick, flagstone, and tile. Here, you may see how a stamped concrete can be utilized to make your driveways, yards, pool decks, patios, and entries appealing.

Due to the broad assortment of choices when it comes to concrete colours, concrete pattern, and price of printed or stamped concrete with respect to the materials as an alternative, the options have developed to be available and popular. Paving is another highly favored option.

Regularly the patterns and colours for stamped cement are selected to mix with other tile, patterned concrete elements, or stone at home. Complex designs that include fountains, steps, and yards can be attained if patterns are forced to the concrete. Similarly, stamped cement can be mixed with a certain pattern, for example hexagonal tile, stone, running bond brick, or worn rock. Concrete gives the best picture for manufacturing a cheap copy of more costly materials, but still maintains a very nice and natural look.

Among the most typical applications for altering concrete slabs is staining concrete. It is often known as coloured cement, and designers, builders, and homeowners find stained concrete appealing, due to the undeniable fact that the distinctive result can be achieved by mixing application techniques, colours, etc. On concrete flooring and other substances. The outcomes are limited only through the imagination of folks that are concerned in the stained cement procedure.

Due to the neutral tone and absorbent qualities, it?s the ideal blank canvas for a colour which is topically applied. Decorative concrete contractors employ acid-based chemical dyes and can produce earth-toned, rich colour systems that seem like natural marble, leather, stone, or wood, providing a completely custom look to concrete driveways, walkways, concrete walls, cement floors, verandas, pool decks, and more.

An online business index can be very helpful in finding a paving contractor.

Bad news, good news, and asking for help | Greta Christina's Blog

Dear Readers,

I have some more news of the crappy variety. It?s not as alarming as it?s going to sound: it?s probably going to be fine in the long run, and even in the medium run. So even though your first reaction may be alarm, try to not go there if you can avoid it. But I want to fill you in. And I?m going to ask you for some help.

The bad news is that I was just diagnosed with endometrial cancer. I got the initial biopsy results Saturday, and met with the oncologist Tuesday.

The good news about the bad news: To the degree that there is a ?good? kind of cancer, this is the good kind: well-differentiated cells, Class 1, in a body part that I have no great need of and am fine with having removed. But it?s still, you know, cancer. Right now, the oncologist is pretty sure that it?s totally treatable with hysterectomy ? ?totally treatable? meaning ?after the hysterectomy I really won?t have cancer any more? ? and he?s pretty sure I won?t need chemotherapy or radiation. There is, however, a slight but not trivial chance that it?s actually Class 2, in which case I would need chemo and/or radiation. They?ll know that for sure after I?ve had the surgery and they?ve analyzed the tumor. I?m having the surgery Wednesday, October 24.

And yes, I am aware of the ridiculously horrible timing of getting this news not even two weeks after my father died. Ingrid is referring to it as ?emotional whiplash.? I kind of can?t think about that right now. Right now, at this point I?m mostly just hugely relieved that the cancer isn?t worse, and am just wanting to move forward and take care of business and my health.

The bad news again, and the part where I?m going to ask for help: This situation is going to seriously interfere with my ability to work for a little while. I?m going to be weak and doped up on pain meds for at least a couple of weeks after the surgery ? possibly longer ? and travel will be inadvisable for six weeks after the surgery. And all that?s assuming the best-case scenario of ?no chemo or radiation?? which, again, is the most likely scenario, but not the only one. I?ve had to cancel my appearance at Skepticon, as well as all my other speaking gigs for the next couple of months ? and I already had to cancel several speaking gigs when my dad died. Speaking gigs are a significant part of my income, both for the honoraria and the book sales. I also won?t be able to do much writing or other work for a little while, including paid writing gigs, book promotion, work on my next books, etc. This, after my immediate and obvious health concerns, is my biggest worry right now. As regular readers know, I only just a few months ago quit my day job and switched to writing and speaking full-time. I?m fortunate enough to have good insurance ? but being self-employed means no sick leave or paid time off, and I haven?t yet had time to build up any sort of financial cushion. My financial plans for switching to full-time freelance writing and speaking did not include being sidelined for several weeks with cancer and a death in the family.

Which brings me to the part where you can help.

If I could not worry about money for the weeks while I?m recovering, it would take a big, big load off my mind. So I?m swallowing my pride, and am doing a fundraiser/ pledge drive. I?d hoped not to do any more of these after my book came out, but these are extraordinary circumstances, and I am sucking it up.

If you want to help out, you can make a one-time donation to this blog, of any amount. Or you can ?subscribe? to this blog, which means an automatic donation of five dollars a month for a year.

Even small donations would be very much appreciated: they do add up. You can use a credit card if you don?t have a PayPal account, or you can use your PayPal account if you do. And if you don?t want to use the PayPal system at all, you can send a check or money order to:

Greta Christina
PO Box 40844
San Francisco, CA 94140-0844

If you can?t or don?t want to donate money, but you still want to help, other helpful things would be:

Help spread the word about this fundraiser: on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, your own blog, any other reasonable means that you have access to.

Buy my book, Why Are You Atheists So Angry? 99 Things That Piss Off the Godless, and/or encourage other people to buy it and publicize it.

Give me suggestions for books and DVDs to keep me occupied during my recovery. I?m looking for books, movies, and TV shows that are engaging and entertaining, but not heavy or serious, and that don?t take too much brainpower to follow.

Send kind words. They help, more than I can say.

And if you do want to donate or subscribe, here are those numbers again:

Thanks so much. I?ll be back to blogging as soon as I can.

from your own site.

Apple begins construction on Prineville data center

Apple has started the first phase of construction of its new data center in Prineville, Oregon. The construction of the first of two buildings will cost Apple $68 million, and the building will be 338,000 square feet and contain two ?data halls?. Future plans include a second building identical to the first, along with fourteen more data halls. Apple originally purchased the 160-acre plot of land in February, as OregonLive reports:

Apple paid $5.6 million in February to buy 160 acres from Crook County, and promptly set up a small, 10,000 square foot modular data center on the site.

Only the modular facility is visible from the street. Apple, always secretive, restricts access to its main construction site.

In addition to the two massive buildings already planned, there is enough land for additional development, should Apple decide to expand the facility. Apple has committed to power the data center using only renewable energy sources, including hydroelectric, geothermal, and wind power. While they haven?t announced when it will open, Apple has said that the facility will employ ?dozens? of people when it is finally constructed.

When complete, the Prineville complex will be the second massive data center that Apple has built for iCloud in the United States, after opening their North Carolina facility in late 2010. With iCloud playing a central role in both iOS and OS X, investments like these are important for Apple to make in order to build a robust and stable infrastructure for their services, and the North Carolina and Prineville facilities are surely the first of many such facilities to come.

make money online: Social Network Marketing Is Vital In The ...

Many people make financial decisions today after carrying out research on the web. In many cases, they'll look at the sites of major or well-known bank directly, and then in other cases, they'll search for banks that provide the best interest rates, certain account characteristics and more. If potential banking clients are not able to find the information and facts they are looking for on your banks website, there is a strong probability that the possible client will go to other bank's websites rather than call you directly for more information. With an improved bank marketing strategy, however, you are able to enhance the experience your prospective customers enjoy on the net.

Relevance Marketing

The truth is a significant amount of push marketing initiatives are not successful. Consumers typically don't absorb details about services, features and more your bank offers while they are not actually trying to find that information. If they seek out certain information, however, you want to make sure that they find the details about your organization that they are looking for. Website management services that incorporate relevance marketing can strengthen your marketing efforts in this manner in order to ensure your marketing initiatives are targeted, pertinent and useful at the times when your prospects are looking for that information.

Engagement Marketing

Your potential prospects want a different sort of internet banking experience today, which means your bank marketing strategy needs to account for that. Engagement marketing is a method of marketing that allows you to make full use of all of the benefits and advantages that the Web has to offer, and it allows you to interact with your potential customers in a targeted way that is often helpful to them. It is not necessarily enough to send out postcards and letters. Rather, you need to engage consumers with your marketing message.

Social Network Marketing

Social networks are very popular these days, so your bank must be using social network marketing in its bank marketing strategy. Millions of people use different social media sites to maintain personal and professional relationships as well as to learn more about different products, services and more. By establishing a awareness on these websites, you can market to consumers where they hang out in a social setting.

Some marketing firms provide a wide range of services, however when you are in the financial sector, you want to make use of a bank marketing firm that specializes in the financial niche. With the selection of the right marketing firm together with a sound marketing strategy and quality website management services, you can increase profits in your bank.

Algeria caught in quandary over Mali crisis

ALGIERS (Reuters) - North African heavyweight Algeria is worried by the chaos in neighboring Mali, where Islamist militants have seized vast tracts of the country, but believes foreign intervention will only make things worse.

Much is at stake for Algeria, Africa's biggest country and a wealthy oil and gas exporter that shares a 2,000 km (1,250 mile) border with Mali and sees itself as a major regional power.

It is still recovering from its own conflict with armed Islamists in which international human rights groups say more than 200,000 people were killed over two decades.

Algeria has no desire to see Mali become the "Afghanistan" of the Sahel, a desert region that spans nearly a dozen of the world's poorest countries on the Sahara's southern rim.

But nor does it want to act as the West's proxy policeman, a reluctance which puzzles some of its neighbours.

"Algeria is the only force in the Sahel with the expertise, capabilities and the means to intervene to tackle al Qaeda there. I don't understand why it refuses to intervene," said an ambassador from a Sahel country, who asked not to be named.

Algiers has advocated a diplomatic solution in Mali since Tuareg rebels and Islamists captured two thirds of the country after an army coup in Bamako in March. The Islamist militants, some linked to al Qaeda, later hijacked the revolt in the north.

Algeria gave a guarded welcome to Friday's U.N. Security Council resolution asking African regional groups and the United Nations for a Mali military intervention plan within 45 days, saying it included "numerous elements" of its own position.

TALKS WITH MILITANTS

To Algerian satisfaction, the French-drafted U.N. measure urges Mali to engage in dialogue with Tuareg rebels if they cut links with groups such as al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJWA).

A security source said Algeria itself held talks this month with the militant Ansar Dine group which seeks to impose strict Islamic law in Mali and which has close links with AQIM.

There was no word on the outcome of the talks, which local analysts suggested may have been an attempt to persuade Ansar Dine to cut ties with AQIM to qualify as a negotiating partner.

Mali's main Tuareg rebel group, the MNLA, thrust to the sidelines by its Islamist allies-turned-rivals, last week softened its secessionist stance to try to win Western support.

"We declare a right to self-determination, but that doesn't mean secession," said Ibrahim Ag Assaleh, an MNLA official. In April his group declared an independent state in Mali's north called Azawad to redress grievances about government neglect.

The African Union, West African body ECOWAS, the United Nations and others meet in Bamako on October 19 to discuss plans for Mali, which have so far focused on possible action by an ECOWAS force, although any military move may be months away.

The same day, the United States will launch a "strategic dialogue" with Algeria, which it sees as a vital ally in the fight against al Qaeda, especially its North African arm AQIM.

Nevertheless, Algeria, which fought a bitter eight-year independence struggle against France from 1954 to 1962, is deeply skeptical about any military meddling in Mali.

Algiers opposed the NATO campaign in Libya, is against any similar action in Syria's uprising and often cites the unhappy outcomes of U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"It recognizes that military approaches usually generate unintended consequences," said Geoff Porter, director of North Africa Risk Consulting. "It is very concerned that a military approach will simply lead to further instability."

BLOWBACK FROM LIBYA

The upheaval in Mali is at least partly a consequence of last year's overthrow of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, whose Tuareg fighters fled southwards into Niger and Mali, while weapons spilled out of Libya to Islamist and other armed groups.

Algiers also fears for the fate of its diplomats kidnapped in Mali, where several militant groups are led by Algerians.

MUJWA says it has already killed one of seven Algerian diplomats abducted in the northern town of Gao. Algiers has not confirmed this. Four of the diplomats have been freed.

Yet Algeria's aversion for foreign intervention sits uneasily with international and African concern about Mali, so it has tempered its position to avoid appearing isolated.

Abdelkader Messahel, Algeria's pointman for North African and African affairs, said after a trip to Mauritania, Mali and Niger last week that talks among Mali factions, including those demanding independence, should be encouraged.

"But for organized crime and terrorism which is a threat to our countries, there is no room for negotiation," he declared.

Lyes Boukraa, a security expert whose views usually reflect the Algerian government's, argued that combating terrorism requires good intelligence, rather than a heavy troop presence.

"Why should Algeria take a risk that may have a negative impact on its internal security?" he asked.

Foreign intervention might also unify militants and win them more recruits to chase the "infidels" from the region, said Anis Rahmani, security expert and editor of Algeria's Ennahar daily.

"A military intervention is needed in Mali to end al Qaeda's presence there, but it has to be undertaken by Mali."

Given the evident incapacity of the Bamako government to reclaim the north without outside help, Algeria's challenge is to make its "political solution" work fast before France's drive to orchestrate an African-led military one materializes.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Bruce Springsteen will be back campaigning for President Barack Obama.

The musician will join former President Bill Clinton at a Thursday rally in Parma, Ohio, two days after the second presidential debate. Obama will not attend the rally.

Springsteen also will appear at a campaign event Thursday in Ames, Iowa.

Springsteen campaigned for Obama in 2008, but these will be his first political appearances of the 2012 cycle. Clinton is a prominent campaigner for Obama.

Clinton and Springsteen's joint appearance in Ohio underscores the importance of the key swing state. Polls show Obama with a slight lead there over Mitt Romney, but the Republican presidential candidate is spending an increasing amount of time and resources in the state ahead of Election Day.

Internet isolation isn't the way to go, Iran

The creation of a separate, halal internet in Iran may mark the beginnings of an online breakaway. The country's leaders proceed at their own risk

YOU can understand why Iran's leaders might want to cut their country off from the global internet. Theirs was the nation targeted by the Stuxnet computer virus, after all. It's somewhat unsurprising, then, to learn that Iran is quietly developing a national intranet that adheres to Islamic values, safely isolated from the World Wide Web (see "First evidence for Iran's parallel halal internet").

But self-defence is only part of the story. Social control is the other and Iran-watchers assume it's a large part of the halal internet's raison d'?tre. Iran's regime knows first-hand how powerful online activism can be: street protests after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's controversial re-election in 2009 were in part fomented by social media.

So will it work? Iran may be among the world's most heavily censored nations, but it is also host to one of the Middle East's most vibrant online communities, and previous attempts to restrict access have met with widespread resistance. Economic isolation, driven by United Nations sanctions, has already cost the country dear. Dissatisfaction is on the rise, and online isolation will only exacerbate it. Iran's leaders proceed at their own risk.

Shuttle Xing: Endeavour treks through LA streets

(AP) ? It's a surreal sight residents won't soon forget: A hulking space shuttle strutting down city streets, pausing every so often to get its bearings as it creeps toward retirement.

Endeavour's terrestrial journey began before dawn Friday when it departed from the Los Angeles International Airport, rolling on a 160-wheeled carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs.

Hundreds of camera-toting spectators, some with pajama-clad children in tow, gaped as the 170,000-pound Endeavour inched by with its tail towering over streetlights and its wings spanning the roadway.

Over two days, it will trundle 12 miles at a top speed of 2 mph to its final destination ? the California Science Center where it will be the centerpiece of a new exhibit.

After an initial bumpy ride and a brief delay, the shuttle pulled off a massive feat of parallel parking by backing into a shopping center parking lot for a layover as crowds cheered on.

"This is unlike anything we've ever moved before," said Jim Hennessy, a spokesman for Sarens, the contract mover.

Spectators flocked to the parking lot in the Westchester neighborhood to get a glimpse of Endeavour, which was guarded by an entourage of police, private security and construction crews.

Janet Dion, a family therapist from nearby Manhattan Beach, marveled at the shuttle, its exterior weathered by millions of miles in space and two dozen re-entries.

"You can sense the magnitude of where it's been," Dion said, fixated on the heat tiles that protected the shuttle during the return to Earth.

James Nieuwdorp, a technician for a transit agency, saw Endeavour's aerial victory lap around California last month and traveled to see it again before it becomes a museum piece.

He enjoyed how the shuttle brought strangers together. There was "lot of camaraderie ? something that's hard to be seen these days," he said.

After a nine-hour layover, Endeavour hit the streets Friday afternoon toward the suburb of Inglewood, home of the iconic Randy's Donuts shop. As it rolled past front lawns, some homeowners climbed on their roofs for a better view.

The shuttle will take another hours-long break as crews re-route power lines, causing temporary outages to several hundred homes. It will later be transferred to a special dolly towed by Toyota pickup truck for the move over Interstate 405. The automaker received a permit to film a commercial.

Shuffling a five-story-tall shuttle through urban streets was an undertaking that took nearly a year to plan. Because the 78-foot wingspan hangs over sidewalks in some locations, police enforced rolling street and sidewalk closures along the route.

The limited access frustrated some businesses that counted on huge crowds lining the curbs to boost business.

Saturday is typically the busiest day for James Fugate, who co-owns Eso Won Books in South Los Angeles. But with Endeavour expected to pass through, Fugate braced for a ho-hum day in sales.

"We don't close because we're slow. That's when you pull out a book to read," he said.

The baby of the shuttle fleet, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which exploded during liftoff in 1986, killing seven astronauts. It thundered off the launch pad 25 times, orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times and racked up 123 million miles.

Transporting Endeavour required a specialized carrier typically used to haul oil rigs, bridges and heavy equipment. The wheels can spin in any direction, allowing the shuttle to zigzag past obstacles. An operator walks alongside, controlling the movements via joystick. Several spotters along the wings are on the lookout for hazards.

Before Endeavour could travel through the streets, some 400 trees were chopped down, cable and telephone lines were hoisted, and steel plates were laid down to protect the streets and underground utilities.

Endeavour will mostly travel on wide boulevards with some boasting as many lanes as a freeway. While there have been advance preparations, there was remaining work to be done during the move, including de-energizing power lines.

One of the trickiest parts occurs Saturday when Endeavour treks through a narrow residential street with apartment buildings on both sides. With its wings expected to intrude into driveways, residents have been told to stay indoors until the shuttle passes.

The route was selected after ruling out other options. Dismantling the shuttle would have ruined the delicate heat tiles. Helicoptering it to its destination was not feasible. Neither was crossing on freeways since the shuttle is too big to fit through the underpasses. The cost of transporting it cross-town was estimated at over $10 million.

As complex as the latest endeavor is, Southern California is no stranger to moving heavy things.

In 1946, Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" aircraft was built in sections and hauled from Culver City to Long Beach, 30 miles away. In 1984, an old United Airlines DC-8, with its wings and tail disassembled, was towed from Long Beach to the science center.

Earlier this year, a two-story-tall chunk of granite was hauled 105 miles from a rock quarry to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
