Another courageous casualty in Pakistan, journalism's most dangerous country

Murtaza Razvi, an editor at one of Pakistan's leading English newspapers, was murdered in Karachi yesterday. He was one of many journalists I met on a recent trip who have refused to give up their work despite threats.

Two weeks ago I was in an office in Karachi, Pakistan, with a room full of journalists, including Murtaza Razvi, an editor at Dawn newspaper, discussing challenges facing the country?s vibrant media, including risks to covering Pakistan. Yesterday I was e-mailed that he had been murdered.

Before I left for Pakistan a few weeks ago on a journalist exchange program sponsored by the East-West Center, I asked colleagues who reported in the country, both Pakistani and American, about their greatest challenge.

Americans complained of the government's game of ?smoke and mirrors,? a disinformation campaign that puts most other government propaganda efforts to?shame. The challenge for Pakistani journalists, on the other hand, was decidedly more severe. ?We have a completely free media in Pakistan, but no protection,? said one journalist based in Islamabad.

How severe? The country leads the world in journalist murders, the latest just yesterday.

Seven of the other eight Pakistani journalists at a meeting with my group proceeded to share stories of threats. It was common, they said, to receive a threat by a phone call from the Taliban for not getting enough quotes from them, from political parties for including the Taliban in a story or not being represented the way they saw fit, and even from Pakistan?s version of the CIA, the ISI.

But this wasn?t something that had them lining up to find a new job. It was just how things work. Most of the time the person on the other end of the line is bluffing, they said. They had gotten used to the fact that Pakistan was the deadliest country for journalists in 2010 and 2011, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. And killings there have been met with near-perfect impunity throughout the years. For some perspective, consider that there have been 19 unsolved murders of journalists since 2002. (see CPJ?s video)

When you put it that way, having to peer through smoke and mirrors to get to the heart of a story doesn't look so bad.

I visited the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting while I was in Pakistan. The ministry has jurisdiction over the rules and regulations relating to information, broadcasting, and the press. Like many Pakistanis we spoke to on this trip, the minister talked at length about how wonderful it was to have an active, independent, vibrant media that had absolutely no restrictions and how that was contributing to democracy in Pakistan.?

However, when we raised the question of safety and reported threats against journalist, Minister of Information Firdous Ashiq Awan (since replaced), without asking for details or pausing to smooth this over, said: ?Those are complete fabrications. It never happened. It?s not happening.?

We brought up the famous case of Syad Saleem Shazad, a prominent journalist who went missing after exposing Al Qaeda infiltration of the military. He had been ?warned? several times by the ISI for covering sensitive topics, according to his family. He was later found dead. The ISI, was implicated, though it denied involvement.

The minister dismissed the scenario of Shazad's murder as unproven. She did clarify that, "we condemn that sort of action." But she stuck with her statement that there were no threats or real dangers for journalists who were not "over smart." A former local journalist who now works in the ministry agreed with her.

At this point, Issam Ahmed, the Monitor?s Islamabad correspondent, who had been invited to the round table by the minister, shared a story about a time he had been reporting on a sensitive topic in northern Pakistan, when he was summoned into a car by agents to go meet with the ISI bureau chief. The car sped off at breakneck speed to the headquarters, where the chief warned him to ?not report critically.? So, Issam, said, it wasn't a death threat, but intimidation happens.

Twitter Buys Personalized Email Marketer RestEngine To Deliver Best Tweet Digests

RestEngine TwitterTwitter has just finalized a deal to?hire the team and buy the technology of RestEngine, a personalized email marketing service, which could help Twitter deliver email digests of great tweets you've missed. The deal fits well with Twitter's recent talent acquisition of Summify, which creates these kinds of personal news digests. RestEngine had been powering re-engagement?emails for social game companies like Crowdstarthat?enticed users to start playing again by telling them what their in-game friends had been achieving. Three of four founders will be joining the flock, and the company's technology will come along with them. RestEngine's founder Joe Waltman called this is an acquisition since Twitter's gaining both employees and tech, though Twitter views it as an acqui-hire. Co-founder Joe Waltman won't be moving to Twitter as he tells me his entrepreneurial spirit is too strong and he'll be working on new projects after a vacation. It looks like Twitter's got a plan to get more of its inactive users tweeting again...

(AP) ? Martin Brodeur has taken this path to the Stanley Cup championship before.

Two times he's beaten the Philadelphia Flyers in the East playoffs and gone on to hoist the Cup high over his head in celebration in the finals.

One of the game's all-time greats, the veteran goaltender has a chance to do it again.

Bryce Salvador, David Clarkson and Ilya Kovalchuk scored goals to lift New Jersey to a 3-1 Game 5 win over the Flyers on Tuesday night, sending the Devils into the conference championship round for the first time since 2003.

The Devils await the winner of the New York-Washington series, which the Rangers lead, 3-2. New Jersey rebounded this season under coach Peter DeBoer in his first season on the Devils' bench after the franchise suffered one of its worst years since general manager Lou Lamoriello took over in 1987.

Brodeur, who turned 40 this series, had 27 saves and the Devils hope they can ride him all the way to June like they did in their three previous championship runs.

"I think we deserved it," Brodeur said. "We played really hard this series, we survived a few scares in the first series. So it's nice that we finished this off."

The sixth-seeded Devils scored twice in the first period and became the first East team to win four straight games in these playoffs. They missed the playoffs last year for the first time since 1996. They knocked off Florida in the first round and had an easier time than expected eliminating the Flyers.

"It was just sticking with the game plan and doing what it takes to be successful," DeBoer said. "Marty made some saves when he needed to, and we held on."

Brodeur has gone from answering questions about retirement to ones about another chase for the Cup. He has been in net for all three of New Jersey's titles, including 2003, the franchise's last one.

"I don't think he was ever a guy that was going to retire," Clarkson said. "He's won us some games in the playoffs. He's held us in. He's exciting to watch."

The Devils have won six of seven and believe they have another title run in them. This is the third time in franchise history New Jersey has defeated Philadelphia in the postseason. The previous two times (1995 and 2000), the Devils went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Max Talbot scored for the Flyers, but Philadelphia was eliminated in the conference semifinals for the second straight season. The Flyers finished the season without suspended All-Star forward Claude Giroux because of his illegal check to the head on New Jersey center Dainius Zubrus in Game 4.

"It should have been a tighter series," Giroux said, wearing a suit.

The Flyers underwent a facelift last summer that saw them trade team captain Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings and acquire goalie Ilya Bryzgalov from the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Kings and Coyotes will play in the West finals while the Flyers watch from home.

The Flyers again failed in the postseason to hold a quick lead after Talbot scored in the first. Meanwhile, the Devils survived a rugged series of hits unleashed by a frustrated Flyers team that failed to build anything off the surprising first-round victory over Pittsburgh. Anton Volchenkov, Marek Zidlicky and Zubrus all suffered punishing hits that knocked them to the ice in Game 5.

Bryzgalov had a disheartening end to an erratic first season in Philadelphia. He allowed two YouTube-worthy goals like only he can. Salvador unleashed a shot from outside the circle that skipped along the ice as if he threw a rock across a pond and sailed high over Bryzgalov for the tying goal.

In a season loaded with head-scratching tallies allowed, Bryzgalov saved the weirdest for the finale. Clarkson's dump-in was pushed by Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen toward the goaltender. Instead of controlling it, wrapping it around the boards or even just covering it, Bryzgalov pushed it right back toward a charging Clarkson, whose stick grazed the puck as it slid through the goalie and past the line.

"I honestly had no idea it went in until I heard the crowd yelling," Clarkson said. "Just to be on the forecheck when that went in is an unbelievable feeling."

The Devils could have credited Bryzgalov with an assist on that goal.

"I was just trying to pressure him to make a play," Clarkson said. "I had no idea it was in until the crowd starting booing. It's a goal I'll take any day."

Kovalchuk fired a liner from the high slot after the Devils won the faceoff to make it 3-1 in the third to seal the win. From there, New Jersey's depth took over and stuffed any hope of a home team rally.

"The fact that we have four lines and roll six defensemen really helps," DeBoer said. "It's a team game. We play that way, and guys really believe in what we're doing. But that's a good team we just beat over there, and we have a long way to go."

All the inspirational "Rocky" clips on their highlight reel couldn't inspire the Flyers. Even Giroux's presence may not have even mattered in Game 5. Without their leading scorer, the Flyers tried to knock around the Devils with a series of both clean and questionable hits.

Zac Rinaldo stayed on his skates when he charged full speed with his right shoulder and crushed Volchenkov against the boards. Volchenkov was down on his knees for several minutes before he gingerly walked to the bench.

"That's my bread and butter right there," Rinaldo said. "That's what I feed off of and that's what gets the boys going."

But the hit sparked just a short dose of momentum. Talbot won a fight for the puck in front of the crease to score moments later for a 1-0 lead. But that was it for the Flyers' offense. Brodeur snared a Talbot slapper late in the period for one of his 27 saves.

Rinaldo delivered a stiff knee to Zubrus in the second. Wayne Simmonds creamed Zidlicky in the corner, leaving the defenseman sprawled on the ice.

The hits meant nothing more than a brief roar from the crowd, though. Late in the third, the Flyers fans made an early exit ? much like their team. The Flyers haven't won the Stanley Cup since snaring consecutive championships in 1974 and 1975.

"It's hard right now," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. "I can tell you that the group that is in that room right now is a terrific group of men. They play hard and they have a bright future."

Notes: The Devils are 22-16 in Game 5s. ... Flyers D Andrej Meszaros (back) played for the first time since March 1. ... DeBoer is now 2-0 in playoff series this season after never having won a postseason round before as a coach. ... The Flyers, swept by Boston in Round 2 last season, are now 1-8 in their last nine Eastern Conference semifinals games. ... Even with the loss, Flyers F Jaromir Jagr loved his first season in Philadelphia. "I loved everybody on this team. This was probably the most enjoyable year I ever had."

What does Mitt Romney's new ad say about his strategy? (+video)

Don't look for Mitt Romney in his new ad, 'Silence.' It's all about being jobless and 'suffering in silence.' The Romney teamwants to keep the focus on 'the Obama economy.'

How does Mitt Romney want persuadable voters to think about the upcoming presidential election? Yes, we know he?s emphasizing the economy, and putting voters back to work, and so forth. What we?re getting at here is the sort of emotional context the Romney camp hopes will prevail among the swing electorate in November.

As it happens, we think Mr. Romney?s latest campaign ad, titled ?Silence,? is a pretty good guide to what might be his overall strategy here. So as the late great Washington sportscaster George Michael used to say, ?Let?s go to the videotape!?

The ad begins with "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley saying, ?Tonight, new evidence the economic recovery is slowing." Then it moves swiftly, cutting between clips of reporters bemoaning the state of the job market and short bursts of President Obama giving a speech.

The Obama appearances are so brief as to be mere impressions. At one point you hear him say, ?Ask if you?re better off than you were before..."

Then the montage accelerates, and the kind of rising music featured in horror movie trailers comes up. You hear only phrases ? ?We?re not seeing a ton of sunshine,? and so forth. Just as the tension peaks, we see not a slasher attack but Mr. Obama again, this time saying, ?It?s not just how we?re doing today. It?s how we?ll be doing tomorrow."

Boom. Halfway through the ad, the music and the clips stop.

?Today, millions of Americans are suffering in silence,? comes on the screen in large white letters.

What follows is a succession of quotes, interposed over shots of people looking very worried, in dead silence.

?Job growth not nearly fast enough to recover from the Great Recession,? says one quote. ?More than 340,000 workers dropped out of the labor force,? says another.

The ad ends with this: ?This is the Obama economy. It isn?t working.?

For those of you who don?t obsess over this sort of thing frame-by-frame, as if it were an ?Avengers? outtake, we?ll make a couple of Politics 101 points.

Where's Mitt? Challengers generally want elections to be referendums on the incumbent. They themselves are simply the replacement, a relief pitcher out of sight in the bullpen, waiting to be called. That?s why there?s lots of Obama in this ad, but no pictures of a certain former Massachusetts governor. The only Romney reference comes at the end, when his last name appears in small type as having paid for the message.

How are you feeling right now? Romney might be better off if voters cast ballots based on their emotions of the moment. He likely would get more support from folks who are worried about their present circumstances ? after all, the unemployment rate is at a daunting 8.1 percent. Millions of Americans who still have jobs go to bed at night worried about losing them. That?s why this ad ratchets up the anxiety level ? or reminds voters of how high their anxiety level already is.

In contrast, Obama wants voters to think about a longer time frame. His message could be summed up as something along the lines of, ?Remember how bad it was back when I took this job? I inherited a mess, and it?s getting better. Let?s not change horses in the middle of the race.?

Generally speaking, it?s the employment trend line, not the absolute unemployment rate, that matters most in presidential elections. It remains to be seen whether the current ?meh? job growth numbers will generate enough optimism among voters to convince them to give the incumbent another chance.

Matt Fiddes, Former Michael Jackson Bodyguard, Says MJ Tried to Have Brother Randy Killed

Michael Jackson's former bodyguard Matt Fiddes claims that the late King of Pop once tried to have members of his inner circle kill Randy Jackson.

His brother, not the portly American Idol personality of the same name.

In the interview with The Sun (UK), Fiddes claims that Michael was intensely paranoid and "caught in a war with his brothers for years, They were all desperate to sign him up to a $500 million deal for a Jackson 5 reunion tour."

Randy Jackson, Brother of MichaelMichael Jackson Trial Pic

Fiddes explained that the eccentric Michael eventually grew fearful of his sibling.

"Things reached a head when Randy was trying to force his way past the bodyguards to speak to him in one of his rented homes. Michael ordered him to be shot."

Of course, no one shot Randy, who is alive and (presumably) well right now.

Fiddes adds, "[Michael] was out of mind on drugs and luckily Randy was OK."

"Randy was so scared he got on the phone and threatened to call the press. He told the bodyguards, 'If you shoot me the whole world will know about it.'"

Fiddes also claims MJ despised Madonna and poked holes in a Voodoo doll of Steven Spielberg. None of his accusations have been corroborated.

Ali, Quez and Strap of Travis Porter have been on their rap grind for quite a few years, but now that they're getting set to release their major-label debut, From Day 1, on May 29, things really look to be paying off. TP's first official album features 2 Chainz, Jeremih, Tyga, Mac Miller and Mike Posner, but more importantly will be filled with the same type of rambunctious party starters that the trio has hung their hat on. So "RFL" fans can expect the same type of energy when Travis Porter make their way onto the MTV News set on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com.

That's not all, though. Houston rap icon Scarface will be making his very first appearance on the show, as he and Sway will run down his 20-plus-year career in rap. After getting his start with the Geto Boys in the late 1980s, Mr. Scarface went on to build a storied solo career. By mixing true grit and raw emotion with introspective lyrics and heartfelt flows, Scarface has delivered unforgettable hip-hop tracks like 1994's "I Seen a Man Die" and his powerful 1997 duet with Tupac Shakur, "Smile."

Face dropped his last official album, Emeritus, in 2008 but went on to drop his first official mixtape, Dopeman Music, two years later. In 2010 he was locked up and spent 10 months behind bars for failure to pay child support. It was reported that the rapper owed more than $123,000 in support, but now Face's focus is back in the studio after he and frequent collaborator Beanie Sigel announced plans for a collaborative Mac & Brad LP.

"RapFix Live" will also honor the life of fallen Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch, who died on Friday after a three-year battle with cancer.

Catch Travis Porter and Scarface on "RapFix Live" Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. Send your questions for the artists @MTVRapFix!

Twitter?s Mobile Site Now Uses One-Third Less Bandwidth

twitter logoTwitter just announced an update to its mobile site that is meant to bring it up to par with the new version of Twitter the company introduced in December. According to Twitter, the idea behind this update is to "give every person on the planet a consistent Twitter experience." Because of this, the company says, the new version of the mobile site now uses one-third less bandwidth than the previous iteration and should work significantly better on feature phones, older browsers and low-bandwith connections.

7 Days Of Sex Day 6: His Last Chance

So today is day 6 of our Lifetime’s seven days of sex challenge… and my water broke. HA!!! And it was hubby’s turn! Obviously this post is a happening after the fact, as even I will not blog while in labor! I have to say I do believe that this challenge brought my husband and I closer, it set the tone for what was to come and allowed us to be on the same page emotionally and spiritually. And who knows, maybe all the sex made me go into labor! Liam arrived on his due date! I did an all natural water birth at a birthing center and it was an overwhelming experience. My husband was my rock during my labor. He held me for hours while I dozed in between contractions and supported me while I was in the most indescribable pain. I could not have done it without his support. I felt like we were truly connected and brought our child into this world as a united, connected couple. This challenge definitely helped us in the aspect that we were ready for our baby and I was able endure natural labor with his support because we were so [...]

Xcom Global opens international MiFi rental / service center in New York City

xcom mifi rental service centerServing jetsetters at LAX just wasn't enough for Xcom Global. Engadget's personal favorite when it comes to snagging international data before leaving the States is now opening up shop in the Big Apple -- a wise move for increasing its presence in a market where loads of humans are doing business in nations other than the United States. Xcom's calling its new venue a "satellite customer service center," enabling flyers to swing by before they depart JFK (or LGA, we guess) and pick up a global MiFi. Rather than being positioned within an airport, this one's located near Grand Central Station at the offices of Amnet New York on Madison Avenue, and in case you've forgotten, $12.95 per day (and up) can snag you a wireless data device capable of connecting in some 195 countries. Oh, and you can return the device to the same store or via your carrier of choice. Still trying to wrap your head around it? Have a look at our review.
