They work by combing physical and behavioral biometrics ? measurements of a foot?s shape and person?s gait, for example.

Both the shape of our feet and how we walk are unique, explained Todd Gray, chairman and president of Autonomous ID.?

An algorithm fuses this information to create an anonymous ID that is stored on a tiny chip in the insole.

?Not even the user knows what it is,? he told me.

This ID is used, for example, to unlock your door you are within a few feet of it.?

?There is nothing to remember, nothing to swipe, nothing to touch, no backend system to incorporate the authenticity of the biometric,? he said.

Gray said he started working on the concept in 2007 when Iraqi insurgents dressed in U.S. uniforms walked onto a base and abducted U.S. soldiers.

The concept is considered more secure and private than, say, using a fingerprint or eye scan to gain entry to a high security area.

?If your thumb is the only access into a door, they are going to cut it off,? Gray said. ?This is war.?

Autonomous ID partnered this July with Carnegie Mellon University?s Pedo-Biometrics Research and Identity Automation Lab to authenticate and fine tune the technology.

The lab is to receive $1.5 million per year in funding for the venture.

The team will also probe the potential to use the technology as a way to detect early warning signs of diseases such as Parkinson?s and dementia, which can affect how we walk.

Changes in gait, which the insole would notice, could be monitored for a few weeks, explained Mario Savvides, the lab?s director.

?We haven?t started working on this yet, but once we do, it is going to open up a whole new world of possibility,? he told me.

The hacking tool can read the code, and then use it moments later to unlock the door.

KENT ? Wilder Baseball is headed to the Senior Babe Ruth World Series for only the second time in its long and storied history.

?The last time we were in the World Series, and the only time, was in 1987 when I was a player,? Wilder manager Rob Merritt said.

?We were the Aggies then, but it was the same program.?

Merritt has been with the program many years.

?It has been a dream of mine as a coach to take at least one team to the World Series so they could experience what I experienced,? he said.

That dream is about to come true.

Wilder Baseball traditionally has been one of the strongest elite programs in the Pacific Northwest, vying or winning the Washington state championship and contending for the regional title most years.

But until now, Wilder had captured the regional championship only once.

?We have been in the regional championship game many times,? Merritt said.

Wilder was in the regional title game last year in Port Angeles but lost to national powerhouse Portland Baseball Club.

This year, playing in Kent Memorial Park, Wilder took the bull by the horns after meekly dropping its opening game 2-1 to the Siskiyou Jaxx of Yreka, Calif.

A different team

The transformation from that Game 1 loss to the regional championship was sudden and dramatic.

Wilder (20-13) was in complete control after that, stomping in succession in pool play: Vancouver, Wash., Jayhawks 15-4 Thursday night, Wyoming state champion Casper, Wyo., 12-1 Friday and Washington state champion Columbia Basin River Dogs of Moses Lake 9-3 Sunday.

Then in Monday?s championship bracket round, Wilder beat Calgary, Alberta, 5-1 in the loser-out semifinals, and then blasted host team Kent Bulldogs 10-3 in the regional final.

Wilder ended up with a 5-1 regional record and its players got noticed along the way.

Clark Rose of Kingston was named MVP of the tournament with a batting average of an amazing .733 for the six games.

Big 6-foot-8 Easton Napiontek of Port Angeles earned the Cy Young Award for top pitcher of the tournament by going 2-0, including going the distance in the regional title game against Kent after only three days? rest.

Also making the all-tournament team were George Marinan, Justin Straight and Marcus Konopaski.

The 18U Senior Babe Ruth World Series starts July 28 and ends Aug. 4 in Weimar, Texas.

Bracket play

Wilder opened regional championship bracket action by holding off Calgary 5-1 in the semifinals Sunday morning.

The No. 2 team from its pool, the Canadian team had a 2-2 record in pool play.

?They were a pretty good team,? Merritt said. ?They were better than the team we lost to in Game 1.?

The visiting team, Wilder was ahead 4-0 before Calgary scored its only run in the bottom of the third.

The Canadians never threatened Wilder, a team loaded with many of the best players on the North Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas.

George Marinan (2-0) pitched the first six innings, scattering seven hits while giving up just the one earned run.

Rose and Michael Dean of Forks combined to throw the final inning to preserve the win.

Leadoff batter Justin Straight walked twice, scored two runs and had two RBIs while catcher Marcus Konopaski went 2 for 4 with a run and RBI.

Napiontek smacked an RBI-double.

Marinan and Rose both went 2 for 3 each with Mariner scoring a run and ripping a double.

Rose walked and had an RBI.

Title game

Wilder never trailed in the championship final against the Bulldogs.

The visiting team again, Wilder was ahead 6-0 before Kent scored its three runs in the bottom of the third.

Wilder added an insurance run in the fifth, two more in the sixth and a final run in the seventh.

Napiontek (4-1) went the distance on the mound, scattering seven hits and two earned runs on only three days? rest.

Earlier, Wilder blasted the Jayhawks 15-4 in a game that Napiontek fanned 11 batters.

He came back to strike out four against Kent.

His strikeout numbers were down because of a lack of rest, Merritt said.

?He had a pretty gutsy performance against Kent. He did a good job of just basic pitching instead of trying to overpower guys.?

Despite taking some of the speed of his pitches, Napiontek still was throwing in the area of 87- to 88-mph.

Jaxx almost became the little team that shocked the tourney as it tied for first in pool play at 3-1 with powerhouses Wilder and the River Dogs.

But Jaxx was eliminated from bracket play on a tie-breaker that counted the fewest runs given up. Wilder came in first on that criteria while the River Dogs were awarded second and Jaxx was sent packing back to North California.

US sends aircraft carrier to Persian Gulf early

The Pentagon is sending the aircraft carrier USS John Stennis to the Persian Gulf region four months ahead of schedule as tensions rise over Iran?s nuclear program.

An eight-month deployment will be twice as long as originally planned, defense officials told NBC News on Monday.

The major shift in the Stennis deployment comes as Iran renewed its threat to shut down the Strait of Hormuz over tighter international sanctions and the possibility that Israel may launch pre-emptive airstrikes against Iran's nuclear facility.

About 40 percent of the world's seaborne oil exports pass through the strait.

The?shift and extension of the Stennis deployment will allow the U.S. Central Command to keep two aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf region, Gulf of Oman and North Arabian Sea, not only as a hedge against Iran, but also to support combat air operations over Afghanistan.

The carrier USS Lincoln left the Persian Gulf area Monday.

The carriers Enterprise and Eisenhower will remain in the region until the Stennis relieves the Enterprise about five months from now.

It will take the Stennis about a month to reach the region.

The Stennis, whose home port is Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Wash., is at sea in the Pacific, the Navy said.

Body of park ranger recovered from Mount Rainier

Favorable weather conditions Thursday allowed authorities to recover the body of a Mount Rainier National Park ranger who fell to his death on June 21.

Rescuers used a helicopter to?retrieve?the body of Nick Hall, the park ranger who fell 2,500 feet during a rescue operation on Mount Rainier.

Thursday's recovery went smoothly, spokeswoman Patti Wold told The Associated Press. Clear weather conditions Thursday were a boon, after strong winds and adverse winter conditions prevented recovery efforts in the days following the accident.

Seattle's NBC News affiliate?KING 5 reported that the?Sunrise area of Mount Rainier was closed for the day for the recovery.

The body of Hall, 34, will be taken to the Pierce County medical examiner's office in Tacoma, about 35 miles south of Seattle, AP reported.

Hall was part of a team attempting to rescue climbers who fell at the 11,000-foot level of Mount Rainier. The four-year veteran of Mount Rainier National Park's climbing ranger program was assisting with the helicopter rescue when he fell to his death.

Hall is not the first fatality on the mountain this year. In January, ranger Margaret Anderson was killed by a gunman in the park?after trying to stop the gunman's vehicle.

Chris Rock draws fire for July 4 slavery tweet

While Americans were watching fireworks displays and enjoying barbecues, Chris Rock was stirring up some fireworks of his own with a controversial July 4 tweet.

"Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren't free but I'm sure they enjoyed fireworks," Rock tweeted.

Reactions came fast and furious, with some fans telling the actor/comedian they were now swearing off his films for what they considered an unpatriotic comment.

Wrote David Burge, "Good one! I bet your Guatemalan house staff got a good chuckle."

And Jeff Schreiber,?managing editor of?libertarian-conservative blog America's Right, tweeted "Slavery existed for 2000yrs before America. We eradicated it in 100yrs. We now have a black POTUS. ?#Go (expletive) Yourself." Schreiber later followed up with, "I'm not saying we're blameless for that horrid practice, but for @chrisrock to indict the US as he did is inappropriate at best."

Yet some jumped in on Rock's side. Actor Don Cheadle?retweeted Rock's message with a simple "Haha," which put Cheadle on some Twitter user's enemies lists.

Cheadle later jumped into the Twitter fray, debating the comment with others. "Where exactly is the bigotry in that joke? Who is the victim? 18th century whites?" Cheadle wrote in a later tweet.

Actor Zach Braff also joined the fray, tweeting, "Slaves weren't freed for another 90 years. So maybe just enjoy some of the fireworks..."

Politics flew fast and furious, of course. Bradford Jones?tweeted back at Rock and Braff, "u bashed July4th as "White peoples independence day." Know who gave u urs? Republicans. ur welcome."

Rock, however, didn't seem to be bothered. His next tweet was about?a potential?New York Knicks?trade. But one?reader found a connection even there. Lincolntf wrote to Rock, "White men trading black men amuses you these days, eh?"

Boeing expects market for 34K new planes

Boeing is predicting that the world's airlines will buy 34,000 new airplanes over the next 20 years, driven by strong growth in China, India, and other emerging markets.

Boeing predicted that $4.5 trillion worth of planes will be sold. It will have to compete with Airbus and other competitors including Bombardier, Embraer, and China's state-owned COMAC.

Boeing says the most planes will be sold in the Asia Pacific region. The next biggest market is Europe. North America is third.

The Chicago company reduced its projection for the number of freighter airplanes that will be sold. It says the cargo market remains sluggish.

Boeing does a detailed annual study of airline sales trends. Airlines order planes years in advance, so Boeing has to make production decisions years in advance, too.

Charting autism's neural circuitry: Deleting single gene results in autism-like behavior and immunosuppressant drug prevents symptoms

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? Deleting a single gene in the cerebellum of mice can cause key autistic-like symptoms, researchers have found. They also discovered that rapamycin, a commonly used immunosuppressant drug, prevented these symptoms.

The deleted gene is associated with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a rare genetic condition. Since nearly 50 percent of all people with TSC develop autism, the researchers believe their findings will help us better understand the condition's development.

"We are trying to find out if there are specific circuits in the brain that lead to autism-spectrum disorders in people with TSC," said Mustafa Sahin, Harvard Medical School associate professor of neurology at Boston Children's Hospital and senior author on the paper. "And knowing that deleting the genes associated with TSC in the cerebellum leads to autistic symptoms is a vital step in figuring out that circuitry."

This is the first time researchers have identified a molecular component for the cerebellum's role in autism. "What is so remarkable is that loss of this gene in a particular cell type in the cerebellum was sufficient to cause the autistic-like behaviors," said Peter Tsai, HMS instructor of neurology and the first author of this particular study.

These findings were published online July 1 in Nature.

TSC is a genetic disease caused by mutations in either one of two genes, TSC1 and TSC2. Patients develop benign tumors in various organs in the body, including the brain, kidneys and heart, and often suffer from seizures, delayed development and behavioral problems.

Researchers have known that there was a link between TSC genes and autism, and have even identified the cerebellum as the key area where autism and related conditions develop.

In both cases, deleting this gene caused the three main signs of autistic-like behaviors:

• Abnormal social interactions. The mice spent less time with each other and more with inanimate objects, compared to controls.
• Repetitive behaviors. The mice spent extended amounts of time pursuing one activity or with one particular object far more than normal.
• Abnormal communication. Ultrasonic vocalizations, the communication technique among rodents, were highly distressed.

The researchers also tested learning. "These mice were able to learn new things normally," said Tsai, "but they had trouble with 'reversal learning,' or re-learning what they had learned when their environment changed."

Tsai and colleagues tested this by training the mice to swim a particular path in which a platform where they could rest was set up on one side of the pool. When the researchers moved the platform to the other side of the pool, the mice had greater difficulty than the control mice re-learning to swim to the other side.

"These changes in behavior indicate that the TSC1 gene in Purkinje cells, and by extension, the cerebellum, are a part of the circuitry for autism disorders," emphasized Sahin.

The researchers also found that the drug rapamycin averted the effects of the deleted gene. Administering the drug to the mice during development prevented the formation of autistic-like behaviors.

Currently, Sahin is the sponsor-principal investigator for an ongoing Phase II clinical trial to test the efficacy of everolimus, a compound in the same family as rapamycin, in improving neurocognition in children with TSC. The trial will be open for enrollment until December 2013.

"Our next step will be to see how the abnormalities in Purkinje cells affect autism-like development. We don't know how generalizable our current findings are, but understanding mechanisms beyond TSC genes might be useful to autism," said Tsai.

Obama to sign student loan, road building bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Friday plans to sign into law legislation that prevents interest rate increases on new loans to millions of college students and maintains jobs on transportation projects across the nation.

The bill signing at the White House will feature construction workers and college students. Congress approved the legislation last week with a bipartisan majority. Obama had made the expiring student loan interest rates an issue for months.

The bill allows more than $100 billion to be spent on highway, mass transit and other transportation programs during the next two years. Those projects would have expired June 30.

It also maintains interest rates of 3.4 percent for subsidized Stafford loans for undergraduates that would have doubled for new loans beginning July 1 if Congress hadn't acted.

Tom Cruise just can't stay out of the news. After his split from Katie Holmes last week, various greetings for his 50th birthday Tuesday, as well as the announcement that the highest-paid actor in show business, Cruise made even more news when the teaser for his upcoming movie "Jack Reacher" was released.

Standing at 5 foot 7?inches, Cruise wouldn?t seem to be cut out?to?play?the broad-shouldered, 6-foot-5-inch Jack Reacher. Yet despite complaints from some fans of Lee Child's character, Cruise?is portraying the dark?ex-cop vigilante whose rogue adventures span 17 novels.

Based on Lee Child's ninth novel, ?One Shot,??the movie features Reacher?searching for answers?in the case of?a military sniper fatally shooting five random victims. In ?Dexter?-esque outside-of-the-law fashion, Reacher kills those who deserve to die, voicing over in the trailer, ?You think I?m a hero. I?m not a hero. If you?re smart, that scares you, because I have nothing to lose.? ?

Driving without the slightest smile, breaking the bones of thugs dumb enough to cross him, and scaring the Russian hospital patient who narrates the trailer are all?in a day?s work for the morally dubious protagonist. Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote ?The Usual Suspects? and Cruise?s World War II film ?Valkyrie,? directs while famous German documentarian Werner Herzog is set to play the film?s bad guy; sadly, neither he nor ?Die Another Day?s? Rosamund Pike seem to show up in the trailer.

Cruise is the man we?re excited for though. Riding out his recent divorce and dealing with his curious relationship to Scientology, the actor is still able to lead blockbusters like the ?Mission Impossible? saga to box office success while laughing at his own peculiar persona through roles like Les Grossman in ?Tropic Thunder? and the head-banging Stacee Jaxx in the recent flop, ?Rock of Ages.?

His next battle will be to?gainacceptance from Reacher fans. At least he has Child?s support, who said in a video on his blog, "We're going to get 100 percent?Reacher but only 90 percent of the height ... you have to look at who wants to play the part and who can play the part."?

And?regardless,?it?s hard to bank against Cruise?s success. From ?Risky Business? at 19 to his 50^th birthday, he?s been an A-lister for quite some time.

Paramount Pictures told The New York Times in a statement on Monday, ?Tom is a huge movie star for the right reason: He?s a very talented actor whose movies have entertained millions of fans.? They added, his ?ability to make a great movie? is what ?moviegoers remember above all else.?

Not all fans were thrilled. Cracked Steve Mosby on Twitter, "The first trailer for?Jack?Reacher?confirms people's suspicion that Tom Cruise shouldn't have been let within five foot three of the role."

?Jack Reacher? hits theaters Dec. 21.
