The Inevitable Romney And Obama Condoms Are Here | YourTango

high heels red sexy
Spice up your regular condom stash with election-themed gag gifts. Or ... don't!

It was only a matter of time before a condom company decided to cash in on the 2012 election.

It was only a matter of time before a prophylactics company decided to cash in on the election: Sex sells, after all.?

Say It With A Condom, a New York-based customized condom company, has come out with Romney rubbers which are advertised as being "great for any position," and Obama condoms promising not to "break as easily as his promises." ("Hope" is not a form of protection, right?)

Although the Obama condoms should be offensive to his supporters, they're actually outselling the Mitt-themed love-mitts by six to seven percent.?

Company president Ben?Sherman said?he's not surprised by the discrepancy in sales among parties, since Republicans aren't as fond of birth control of any kind.?"Democrats just seem more receptive to condoms than Republicans," he said.

One thing we don't understand is why anyone would want to allow any possibility of thinking about Mitt Romney while having sex. Shudder.

Richfield Hospitality Expands Management Platform into China

Officials of Richfield Hospitality, a leading hotel management company, today announced that it has formed Richfield Hospitality China, a joint venture with a Shanghai China-based ownership group to operate hotels in China. The new company has signed agreements to manage two extended stay hotels and has six additional contracts in the final approval stages.

By expanding globally as well as domestically, Richfield remains on track to reach its previously-announced objective of 60 managed hotels by December, 2015. The company's portfolio now stands at 29 hotels.

"China's expanding middle class has created incredible opportunity for experienced hotel operators," said Greg Mount, president, Richfield Hospitality. "I am confident that local ownership coupled with our operational expertise will enable us to offer hotel owners a compelling management alternative.

"As we develop a presence in China, we actively will seek out additional hotels that can benefit from our experience and the state-of-the-art technology that our sister company, Sceptre Hospitality Resources, can provide," Mount added.

In addition to the company's international expansion, Richfield also added four hotels in Louisiana to its portfolio, representing a total of 289 rooms in the New Orleans/Baton Rouge markets.

For juvenile moose, Momma's boys and girls fare best

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Based on ten years of fieldwork in the Tetons of Wyoming, WCS Conservation Biologist, University of Montana Professor and study author Dr. Joel Berger looked at whether body size of juvenile moose and maternal presence were related to survival of the young animals. In animals from elk to lizards and fish, size matters, and larger individuals enjoy a survival advantage. However, results of Berger?s study showed that for juvenile moose, body mass had no significant effect on overwinter survival. Maternal presence did.

The study appears in the early view section of the on-line edition of the journal Conservation Biology.

The study found that orphaned moose in their first winter were subjected to 8 to 47 times more aggression from adult moose than were young moose whose mothers were present. Overall, the survival of orphan calves was about 8 times lower than those with mothers.

Along with facing more aggression from kicking by adult females and being displaced from the best feeding areas, Berger theorized that orphans incur greater metabolic costs and expend more energy in deep snow. Why orphans were attacked more was not clear, but Berger raised the possibility that mothers were trying to maintain more resources for their own offspring.

?These findings highlight the importance of maternal presence rather than body size and suggest policy changes may be warranted in how harvest quotas are set,? said Berger. ?In some circumstances, the shooting of mothers with young has been permitted under the assumption that calf survival is minimally affected. Clearly, that is not the case.?

In another development from the study, Berger pioneered a new method to estimate the size of juveniles without resorting to immobilization by darting or netting by helicopters ? both methods that are stressful to wildlife. Instead, Berger used photogrammetry?a process of using photographs to determine the properties of objects. Digitally measuring head sizes on photographs enabled estimation of juvenile body mass in a quick and non-invasive fashion.

Berger said, ?Other methods of acquiring data on large animals are exhaustive, expensive and more invasive. Photogrammetric assessment has shown to be accurate, widely deployable and much easier on the animals and scientists, and the findings in this study illustrate the method can be used to inform conservation planning.?

A Return and a Farewell | Marginalia

Not Chicago. Notice the Elevation Change.

As I write these words, I?m actually in New York, not Chicago. I?m out visiting some friends from my undergraduate university (Michigan) who dispersed post-graduation and ended up pretty much all over the country. East Coast, West Coast, Southwest/Texas, Midwest?it?s amazing how that works. It?s kind of a diaspora, even if Ann Arbor was only our temporary home.

Thinking about this brings me to think about where I?ll be a year from now: dispersing again with the rest of the class, both geographically and otherwise. It?s crazy how fast one year rolls by and I?m sure this next one will be done in a flash. On the other end, I?ll have a book manuscript, some more tools for whatever dreams I pursue, and some decisions to make.

Bye!

Career-wise, getting an MFA in Poetry essentially signifies three interests pretty adamantly:

  1. This person is interested in writing.
  2. This person is interested in literature, especially poetry.
  3. This person is potentially interested in joining the academy and teaching.

I don?t really see anything there that limits job potential. You have most of the same skills you came into the program with, plus some extra experience writing and thinking creatively, as well as speaking in front of people if you?re teaching. Plus you have whatever else you?ve been accomplishing with yourself while in the program, which in some cases is pretty significant career experience judging by the people who graduated in the years ahead of me.

All this means, I guess, that you aren?t just limited to publishing and teaching as I may have first thought when I came into the program. If you play your cards right, it should be pretty expansive.

The reason for this fast-forward is that this is our last post together on Marginalia. It?s sad, I know, but you?ll be in good hands with this guy. If you don?t want that guy and you still want me, you can find me blogging about mindfulness, meditation, philosophy, and how to be good at life in general at www.fusionmindfulness.com. Every once in a while I might write something on my personal blog, www.bryemye.com, but right now the only usefulness in that is being attached to my Twitter feed where I link to cool articles and yell out to the cold, empty universe about sports, the news, and life?s woes. Then I tweet happy, loving things at Fusion Mindfulness.

For today, goodbye. For tomorrow, good luck. And forever?

Syria's?first man in space has fled to Turkey and joined opposition forces fighting President Bashar Assad's regime, the latest in a string of high-ranking defections from the conflict-stricken country, Turkey's state-run news agency reported Sunday.

Mohammad Ahmad Faris, 61, crossed into Turkey after reaching the headquarters of the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo, meeting with rebel commanders there, and declaring his solidarity with the umbrella group of rebel fighters, the Anadolu agency reported.

"We are with you with our lives and blood," Anadolu quoted Faris as telling members of the Free Syrian Army.

The agency said Faris crossed into Turkey on Sunday, but Mahmut Osman, an Istanbul-based member of the Syrian opposition group ? the Syrian National Council ? said he had arrived in Turkey on Saturday and would hold a news conference in Istanbul in the coming days. He would not disclose Faris' current whereabouts.

Anadolu reported that it was Faris' fourth attempt to defect, after three previous efforts had failed. It gave no details on his escape and provided no source for the report.

Faris joins a string of high-profile figures, including senior army officers, who have abandoned Assad's regime since the uprising began in March 2011. Last month, Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass, an Assad confidant and longtime friend, became the first member of his inner circle to defect in a move hailed as a triumph by the opposition. In July, a member of?Syria's?parliament also fled denouncing the violence by Assad's regime.

Faris, an air force pilot, was part of the three-man crew of a Soviet space mission in 1987 and?Syria's?first man in space, Anadolu reported.

Aleppo,?Syria's?largest city, is close to the Turkish border and is where the rebels have their rear bases. Armed government troops have been steadily shelling rebel-controlled parts of the city.

Turkey has some 45,000 refugees in camps along the 911-kilometer (566-mile) border and is also a staging ground for the Free Syrian Army rebels.
