HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- As the results came in from Tuesday's municipal elections, there were several surprises throughout the Valley.
Voters in Albertville rejected the mayor and elected city council members running for reelection.
The race for mayor was divided four years ago, and it appears council members took sides. For the last four years there's been friction between the mayor and council.
Challenger and Albertville businessman, Tracy Honea, won the race for mayor outright.
Incumbent Lindsey Lyons didn't even place second, coming in a distant third out of four candidates.
"Circumstances were difficult, I guess, with the council and the mayor - all good people.? It's unfortunate, but, again, the people spoke," said Honea.
All elected incumbents in Albertville were voted out.? Only Nathan Broadhurst survived the political fallout.
"Want to bring the city together and bring unity to the city and I think we need that," said Honea.
Voters are giving Honea that opportunity. ?
Honea will start with a clean slate and hopes to forge a positive relationship with those new council members and Broadhurst.
"I'm willing to support those guys and do everything we can to move Albertville forward in a very positive way," he said.
Honea's goal is to keep growing the city with new industry but balance it with new retail ventures as well.
"We've got the traffic.? We've got the people.? And we've just got to figure out how to bring in that retail development," he said.
But Honea said they must first begin with bringing unity to the city.
He said he's looking forward to working with Mayor Lindsey Lyons in the transition period.
